How to remove a Dell Venue Pro 11 (7140) from the desktop dock to prevent external USB hard drive data loss?

I would like to use external usb hard drives attached (maybe via a USB hub) to the desktop dock for my Dell Venue Pro 11 (7140). I don't want data corruption/loss.

Do I need to do "Eject USB device" or a shutdown before undocking to keep my data safe and uncorrupted? I'm especially concerned about a write in progress or data that is cached and not yet written externally.

In other words, with an external USB hard drive attached, how can I safely undock without a shut down first?

Thanks!

There are arguments both ways on this.   Saw an article yesterday on CNET News I think about it.   To be safe, you can click on the USB icon in the taskbar and safely remove the USB device you have attached.   I personally do this with my USB keys to prevent corruption.
