RE: Venue 8 Pro GPS?

Hello SirPL,

This is easy to get mixed up on.  GPS devices like the Venue 7 & 8, work with the global positioning system to calculate your location and can be blocked by being underground or inside building structures.  AGPS on the other hand, is Assisted GPS. It is assisted by available WIFI signals.  This means it will require a WIFI signal to calculate it's location.  It does this by calculating location according to IP addresses of the WIFI provider.

The Venue 8 Pro is AGPS.

Hope that helps,

-Don D

Hi Don

I am afraid your answer is adding to people getting mixed up and is misleading.

aGPS uses an internet connection to assist an onboard GPS chip in acquiring a fix by downloading the orbital data almanac, speeding up the time it takes for the GPS chip to obtain a locational fix. aGPS does not require an internet/data connection, if none exists it will fall back to plain GPS.

What you describe, that the Venue Pro *requires*  wifi connection, and that it uses the ip address or wifi provider location, is NOT aGPS, this is WPS (wifi positioning system), from providers like skyhook wireless.

So, is the venue pro aGPS or WPS?

Thanks

My DVP8 shows 'sierra wireless location sensor' under device manager/sensor. What is that one, is that GPS sensor. But do not find GPS data in maps.

I think I found the source of problem. You probably have dell driver updater set to download new drivers automatically. So did its job - found new driver (exclusively for 3G version) and installed it. So that's why you see this driver on your device list. But unfortunately - you don't have GPS receiver in tablet. It's a pity that Dell has not decided to add GPS to WIFi version.

Sorry for my bad english but I really hope you understand what I tried to say.

Best.

If the sensor device is absent then certainly the device manager will not show the 'sierra wireless location sensor' , that means the device is installed. Maybe that sensor device is not for GPS or it is locked or there is some driver/software problem. Regards.

All I say in this message is just a creative idea.
I do not encourage you to implement ideas described by me.

I found picture of DV8P motherboard:

It's WiFi only version. Notice, that next to white sticker below the processor (the black square) there's LTE mark. I guess that's the spot where GSM/GPS module is placed in 3G versions. If so, we should be able to buy and insert this module on our own. The only question is which module is placed in 3G version...

EDIT:

There's better pic of LTE mark:

I found the right 3G module: http://www.sierrawireless.com/productsandservices/AirPrime_Wireless_Modules/Essential_Modules/MC_Ser.... It's MC8805. And it does have GPS bulit in.

Well, now, that raises an interesting idea for the DV8P: a GPS dongle accessory that could be used on trips, inserted into the tablet's microUSB port. 🙂
