Best replication method for VMAX3 - SRDF or Recover point ???
Hi,
We have to replicate a mission critical application from VMAX3 - 200k to VMAX 3 - 200k.
What would be best to use,,, SRDF or Recover point appliance replication ??
Any comparisons guides or tech. notes would be appreciable.

Hi,
Since a native RecoverPoint splitter doesn't exist today with VMAX3, you would have to put VPLEX in front of it to utilize RecoverPoint or go with VM-based replication in RP4VM's. Comparing RP4VMs to SRDF is comparing apples to oranges since one protects at the VM level and the other protects at the LUN level.
Both technologies are industry proven technologies with a long history of success and a large customer base. SRDF is native to the VMAX3 so there is no need to utilize appliances or bring VPLEX into the mix if that doesn't fit into your business requirements. Looking at SRDF alone, it has many flexible options for your replication needs but does require VMAX-to-VMAX replication whereas RecoverPoint can enable heterogeneous replication if that is a requirement. Its probably a lot to go over in this thread on the comparisons since the use cases for each really depend on what you need to accomplish for your business, but in general SRDF is homogeneous replication between VMAX's that can be enabled in a variety of ways (cascaded, concurrent, sync/async, STAR topology, etc). SRDF interoperates with the other features of the VMAX array (timefinder, FAST, etc) as well. Recoverpoint allows for heterogeneous replication (given the usage of different splitters) and provides for continuous protection with journaled points-in-time to recover from. RecoverPoint is appliance-based and can also be used in concurrent and multi-site scenarios depending on your need. Both solutions are fully supported and work with external products like VMware SRM.
Again, there is much more to go into between these solutions as they both provide ultimate protection - it would really be up to the business case you need to accomplish on which one is better. Hopefully the above was a good general overview and my suggestion would be to reach out to your EMC account team to go into a deeper dive on how these solutions could be tailored to your business requirements to get a broader look at them.
