Bets method to safely decommission VMAX Storage

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest any safeguards that might help in a process for safely
removing VMAX storage from a production host?

As we're using auto-provisioning the old trick of removing one path for the
LUN as a method of cross-checking that the correct LUN is being worked on is
not possible so I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas.

Basically, are there any ways apart from the obvious of confirming the dev
ID of WWN to identify a LUN before removing it? For example is it possible to
set an attribute on a LUN that the Platform guys use to identify it using
native OS\volume management tools?

I have heard that some other Vendor Arrays are able to tell if the LUN is in
use on the host but presumably this would require a host agent?

Cheers!

Dynamox,

as Paul said, of course that you can rename a device to another name.

Fom my point of view, working in a dynamic environment where many changes are taking place every month (more or less), because we have many migrations, i prefer to use the Auto Meta/Hyper Creation procedure, so i delete all the previous devices and then i create them back from the scratch.

Straight forward procedure, a few time as an extra effort.

Maybe it is a singularity by me, but i prefer fresh and clean devices.

Guys - quick question:

Can the device identifier feature be implemented online retrospectively for production Devs? I know it is technically possible but is there any associated impact?

symconfigure -sid xxx -cmd "set dev xxxdevice_name='aaa,bbb,ccc,number=SYMDEV';" preview -nop"

Thanks in advance!
