Increasing TDEV size on VMAX with either SMC or SYMCLI

Is it possible to increase the size of a Thin Device on the VMAX using either SMC or SYMCLI?!  I can do it easily on our CX arrays but I was given a request to increase the size of of a thin lun and I can't for the life of me find how to do it on SMC and SYMCLI isn't very helpful either.

I don't have a problem with fixing things on the VMAX but increasing the size of a lun (from say 36GB to 100GB) doesn't seem to be easy to find.  Is there some way to do it like Unisphere or is this a case where I'll have to create a larger device and migrate the data?

Any quick/easy answers appreciated!

Ok that helps to some extent but I don't see any options for creating a meta volume from the existing device.  I will check your document and see if I can find the right answer.  That's definitely been helpful from both of you.  Since I've never had the need to expand luns on a DMX or VMAX (without migration) this is all new to me.

You need to turn it into a meta-device to expand.

You cannot increase or decrease the size of an individual TDEV on a Symmetrix. What you can do is convert it into what we call a metavolume by connecting it to other unused devices. The additional devices will add capacity to the original device without changing any identifying information of it other than size. We offer either concatenated metavolumes or striped. See this document for more detail:

Something like this:

symconfigure -sid XXXX -cmd "form meta from dev AAAA, config=concatenated;

add dev BBBB to meta AAAA;" commit -nop

If pre-allocating:

symconfigure -sid XXXX -cmd "start allocate on tdev AAAA start_cyl=0

end_cyl=last_cyl;" commit -nop

Ok thanks for the help. I will try some of the options listed and report back.

You're missing the "add dev" portion of the command. I know this works.

symconfigure -sid XXXX -cmd "form meta from dev AAAA, config=concatenated; add dev BBBB to meta AAAA;" commit -nop

If pre-allocating:

symconfigure -sid XXXX -cmd "start allocate on tdev AAAA start_cyl=0 end_cyl=last_cyl;" commit -nop

Got it, thank you!

Yeah this isn’t working. I am getting the “missing action” error. Keep in mind I did put in the proper SID and device name.

HI

you should refer to online help for both product SMC and unisphere for vmax

Form Meta dialog box

Use this dialog box to manage metadevices in your configuration.

This dialog box contains the following elements:

  • Device Type
  • Meta Config
  • Stripe Size (Cyl / Blocks)
  • Auto Select
  • Number of Metas
  • Number of Meta Members Including Head
  • Available Unmapped Devices *
  • Filtered/Unfiltered
  • Meta Members
  • Add -> *
  • Add All-> *
  • <-Remove
  • <-Remove All
  • Meta Head *
  • Reserve
  • Comments
  • Expiration
  • Apply
  • Add to Config Session List
  • Cancel
  • Help

* SMC will consider the first device added to the meta device to be the meta head and will further filter the available devices according to its attributes.

Following the steps on page 248 of document, I am not able to see all my existing tdev’s. Is that normal?

Good Day,

can you check if these devices are listed from symcli e.g. symdg list -sid XXX

can you run discovery in SE symcfg disco and in UNIVMAX UI.

Hi,

You might need to check your code version first, if your code is supported with symcli 8.3.0 we can change TDEV device size directly from symdev command:

symdev -sid [symmID] modify [symmDEV] -tdev -cap [new size] -captype

Referred to SYMCLI 8.3.0 CLI Reference Guide (page 159)

Note: Increasing a TDEV size is only available on VMAX3 and All Flash running HYPERMAX 5977. Older generation VMAXes (10K/20K/40K) will still require a meta device for expansion.
