Query around VMAX Autoprovisioning Groups

Jump to solution

I was looking into VMAX auto provisioning groups, I found it interesting.
Now I am trying to mask volumes to a host by creating a Masking View. I have created Initiator port group, Storage Device group, but I stopped creating Target port group. I am getting confused on how to select the Target ports while creating the Target port group. Can I pick randomly any dir:port and add to the group or I need to check any other parameters which will help me identify the target port groups. I am referring to whitepaper:Storage Provisioning: Transitioning to EMC Symmetrix VMAX Auto-provisioning Groups.

I did not get much but they have mentioned some "Rule 17". Where can I get more info around these rules(document/link)?

yes.add those FA pairs which zoned with your host.

take a look at this thread https://community.emc.com/message/501771#501771

for more about rule 17 and you will get more details about this rule from

Hi,

If you zoned, your server with Vmax FA port add those ports to your

initiator group.

rule 17 applicable to DMX models..Rule is nothing but the some of the FA

pair will be equal to 17.for example if your one fa port is 1F:0 then

other would be 16F:0(116=17) and for 2F:0 it will be 15F.(215=17).This

is make sure both FA ports belongs to different powerzone. 1 to 8 director

belongs to powerzone A and 9 to 16 belongs to powerzone B

But this is not applicable in Vmax. I am still following this rule 17 in

our vmax.following this will be easy to remember and handle the port

configuration. If 1F is one port i can say the one will bw 16F without

checking it,otherwise you have to check that each and everytime

Do you want to say add the FA ports used for zoning and connecting to host HBAs, for creating Traget/FA port groups.

And where can I get information around these rules?

your port selection should be based on how many engines you have. If you have one engine you want to make sure there is an odd and an even port on fabric A, and odd/even port on fabirc B. If you have two or more engines, you want to use the same concept only use ports from different engines. In either scenario your host should have 4 paths (at minimum), one HBA is connected to odd/even, second HBA is connected to odd/even.
