sizing question
We are looking at purchasing a new VMAX3 100K dual engine to replace our VMAX 10K single engine and have few questions.
Our VMAX 10K, it was recommended to have disks in group of 16, such as 16 EFDs and like 96 10K drives. I heard this is no longer true any more on the VMAX 3. Can anyone confirm? I don't see that in documentation.
How many FA ports will need to plugged into the SAN fabric? I know on the 10Ks, the processors were attached to ports, but on VMAX3 they are not hard set. I just hope we don't need to have every port connected up from 2 engines. We will only have 16 servers connected to it in a UCS managed environment all running VMware. 10 View and 6 for Servers, No recoverpoint appliances. Our UCS has 2 connections to the SAN fabric port channeled.

Regarding you're first point, you're correct. Since we use CPU pooling on VMAX3 directors, it is no longer necessary to ensure that each individual CPU core can talk to an EFD. Any BE CPU core can now talk to any EFD drive attached to that director. Thus the only best practice now is to try to balance the EFD raidsets across directors.
Regarding your second point, this also involves the new CPU pooling technology. Unlike older VMAXes, any port on a director can be addressed by any FE CPU core in the pool. Therefor each port can utilize all the FE CPUs on its respective director board, all the way up to reaching full line-rate on that port. With that being said, my personal suggestion is to target at least 4 to 8 FC ports for use with each director board.
