Building a SDDC - Your Thoughts Please..

I am helping a customer in building an Internal Cloud aka Next Generation Software Defined Data Center, which would help them to Consume & Deliver IT Services and I have put together a basic approach towards building an SDDC delivering an Integrated Solution approach from EMC & VMware solutions. Any thoughts on fine tuning the same will be helpful.

Current IT Landscape: Large Virtualization Footprint for their IT & IS applications, with VMware (large), SUSE Virtualization for Business Apps (SAP) & Citrix (EUC). They also have large UNIX environment across HP, IBM for their enterprise applications. They use Cisco Nexus 5K across their core, backbone & SAN and they are a very happy EMC customer with VNX, CX4, DMX & VMAX for various solution use cases.

Customer's Wish List: To build an INTERNAL CLOUD for their customers (internal businesses & dept), Provide a Self Service Portal through which the users can request for IT Services & follow through a workflow for approval across different teams, provision the services (from resources across their DC incl multiple virtualization platform, Physical + Virtual as well, Storage & Network resources, etc). This new Capabilities should include manageability of the services (incl lifecycle management). They want to look at a phased approach, have a flexible solution to integrate / support their IT & Application landscape, etc.

Our Approach (Seeking Suggestions) towards building a SDDC:

  • Key Solution Areas to deliver the SDDC Vision:
    • <COMPUTE PILLAR of SDDC> Rapidly Provision and Manage Cloud Services across Private and Public Cloudswith the following solution components which extend the current Virtualization environments on vSphere platform:
      • VMware vCAC: Enables customized, self-service provisioning and lifecycle management of cloud services. Provides a secure portal where authorized administrators, developers or business users can request & manage new IT services. Deliver policy-based approach to automating the Governance and Delivery of infrastructure and desktop services i.e vSphere (ESX 3.5 onwards), Hyper-V, Virtual Desktops on Citrix XenDesktop/XenServer, Physical Environment (HP iLO 3&4). Deliver Resource Governance including Utilization Monitoring (Reserved vs Used), Reclamation. Integrate with vCD & leverage virtual datacenter organizational policies and configuration of Software Defined Services. Deliver VM / Services Lifecycle Automation including Designing Workflows, using pre-defined workflows, etc & Additionally Integrate with vCenter Orchestrator (if reqd).
      • VMware vCD: Enables the basic principles of pooling, abstraction and automation to all datacenter services on the existing vSphere based Virtualization Environments.
      • VMware vCOPS: delivering simplified management tasks, intelligence and visibility to proactively ensure health, efficiency and compliance with IT policies
      • EMC VNX Storage Analytics: will provide Storage Analytics including Performance, Capacity Consumption. Supports VNX & CX4 environments available with the customer.
      • EMC SRM Suite: to deliver Real-Time & Historical reporting & performance trends (W4N), Analyze & Performance and Optimize Storage Resources (ProSphere) & Maintain Compliance and Support (SCA), Reports on heterogenous storage environments (W4N),
      • EMC SMARTS: To deliver additional SDN capabilities on VDC Visibility, Configuration Mgmt, Troubleshooting, Protocol support, etc

Ramesh...great start...a few things that you also might want to make sure that are part of the design getting started...

Disaster Recovery solutions with RecoverPoint and Avamar/DataDomain, etc.  Protecting the new SDDC is going to be something we should not make an afterthought.

eGRC, from Archer and the RSA solution set, is also something that we need in the new SDDC/Private Cloud world.  As the customers begin to deploy thier own assets via the private cloud, we need to make sure that there are controls in place to keep Risk and Compliance in check.

You may also want to call out the use of vCenter Network & Security (vCNS) which is part of the vCloud Suite.  As private clouds develop, the need to create logical protected boundaries that live within the contex is also going to present itself.

Also, consider that vCAC is also a potential portal for information to flow between the SDDC and the existing (and future) ITSM solutions around Chargeback, Incident and Problem Management, etc.
