Unable to install EMCNASPlugin on ESXI host

Hi,

I'm trying to validate VAAI with Embedded NAS VNX. To do that, I tried installing EMCNasPlugin-1.0-11.zip to an ESXI server through console.  Before trying the installation, I've put the ESXI(version 5.1) server in maintenance mode but the install is still failing with the following error.

ESXI Console logs:

/tmp # ls

EMCNasPlugin-1.0-11.zip

/tmp # esxcli software vib install -n EMCNasPlugin -d /tmp/EMCNasPlugin-1.0-11.zip

[InstallationError]

The transaction is not supported: VIB EMC_bootbank_EMCNasPlugin_1.0-11 cannot be live installed.

Please refer to the log file for more details.

/tmp #

Am I missing something here? Kindly help me in resolving this issue.

Thanks,

Sabitha.

Hi Conor,

Thank you for the quick response. There is enough space for installing this plugin.

/tmp # df -k

Hi Sabitha,

when I remember right the correct syntax would be.

esxcli software vib install -d /tmp/EMCNasPlugin-1.0.11.zip

Ralf

Is this a stateless (autodeploy) installation of ESXi?

See: kb.vmware.com/kb/2005389

Also check if you have enough free space for the installation -

  1. df -k

The following document suggests it should be installed using update manager:

extract the zip

run esxcli software vib install against the .vib file.

example:

esxcli software vib install -v /vmfs/volumes/[DATASTORE]/esx-tools-for-esxi-9.7.0-0.0.00000.i386.vib -f

so in your case, unzip EMCNasPlugin in /tmp

/tmp# esxcli software vib install -v /tmp/vib20/EMCNasPlugin/EMC_bootbank_EMCNasPlugin_1.0-11.vib -f

[mine is already installed...]

Installation Result

   Message: Host is not changed.

   Reboot Required: false

   VIBs Installed:

   VIBs Removed:

   VIBs Skipped: EMC_bootbank_EMCNasPlugin_1.0-11

Hi,

As you suggested, I've installed an ESXI update manager 5.5 version on a Windows Server 2008 VM and connected it to the vCenter Server. From the vCenter server, I've installed the Update manager plugin available from the list of Plugins in the vCenter server. Using update manager in vCenter, I've imported the EMCNASPlugin 1.0-11 zip file. Created and attached a baseline on the ESXI host by selecting the baseline type as Host Extension. According to the documents, Remediate should make this plugin available to ESXI host which is not showing it at all. I have three ESXI servers each with versions 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5. Remediate could show this plugin available only on 5.0 version ESXI host. Please Find attached screenshots of the Remediate wizards. Is this a compatibility issue? Kindly provide us some information. Thank you.emc_plugin_5.0.pngemc_nasplugin_5.0.pngENAS_plugin_5.5.png

Hello sarvas,

is your problem solved? In the entire conversation you didn't mention a reboot. I had a similar issue (cannot be live installed) and a reboot has helped.

Best regards,

Stefan

Hi StefanNett,

I'm not even able to see the plugin in Remediate to reboot the ESXI to have the Plugin. I think this might be related to version incompatiability. Just need confirmation on the same.

Regards,

Sabitha.
