VSI 3.0.1 and Unified plugin for vcenter

hello all !

request some clarification with respect to the two plugins that are currently available for vmware from EMC, the VSI 3.0.1 and the recently announced Unified storage plugin 2.0.6.52.

First, from what i understand VSI can do the following:

1. Through VSI we can view the storage properties for storage coming from clariion/sym/celerra.

2. Through VSI we can PROVISION datastores from  torage coming from clariion/sym/celerra.

question: the VSI plugin cannot be used with Unified storage platforms?

Second, from the recently released unfied vcenter plugin:

1. one can view the properties of the assigned storage, like VSI does, but only for clar and celerra.

2. the user can PROVISION datastores form the allocated storage from the EMC Unfied platforms.

Question: 1. the Unified plugin can provision storage from both Unified platforms as well as the standared SAN only clariion?

               2.  The Unified plugin, at this point in time cannot provision storage from the symmetrix.

Third, we will be needing VSI in case you need to provision/view storage from symm. where as if the user has only Clariion (SAN of Unified) and celerra Unified plugin should suffice. else, he would need to have both unfied and the VSI plugin.

OR have i totally missed the point, with regards to these plugins??

Thanks

Ajay

Hello,

Please see Chad's recent blog post on the EMC plugin roadmap for VMware. http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2010/10/emc-unified-vcenter-plugin-v20-howto-and-details.html

To answer your questions directly..

2. Through VSI we can PROVISION datastores from  torage coming from clariion/sym/celerra.

VSI allows you to provision only from VMAX pools

1. one can view the properties of the assigned storage, like VSI does, but only for clar and celerra.

The Unified plugin does not provide visibility into the storage, this is brought by way of the "EMC Storage" tab at the top when browsing objects in Virtual Center which is only enabled when you install VSI.

1.the Unified plugin can provision storage from both Unified platforms as well as the standared SAN only clariion?

Yes, you can provision if the array does not have NAS functionality.  In this case is would be a CX4-xxx

2.  The Unified plugin, at this point in time cannot provision storage from the symmetrix.

Yes, this is true.  The VSI plugin provisions from the VMAX at this point.

Chad's blog has a brief roadmap for how the plugins are coming together in the near future to bring to the table one plugin for all EMC products in regards to VMware.
