Cannot save to homedir subfolders with Windows 7
We have been dealing with the most confusing problem the past 2 weeks and still no resolution.
VNX5700 using the homedir feature. We have a specific problem where some Windows 7 clients cannot save an .xls or .doc to a subfolder of their home directory. They can save to the root all day long, but not to a subfolder. When trying to save to a subfolder, 2 things happen:
1. The explorer window "kicks" you out of the subfolder. If you were in H:\subfolder1, the explorer window now says H:\
2. The Excel (typically) application does not save and error: “Sorry, we couldn't find ‘H:\subfolder\test.xls’. is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?”
To our knowledge the problem is affecting Windows 7 systems only. Windows 8 and 10 systems do not have this problem.
The application affected is predominantly Microsoft Excel and to a lesser extent Microsoft Word.
It is not affecting all Windows 7 systems. On the VDI systems the Desktop and other folders are redirected to subfolders of the home directory so saving to these locations will also produce an error trying to save.
Files can be copied to subfolders with explorer with no issue. Other applications are fine. I can save to subfolders with notepad all day long.
We have also tested this on the DR VNX5700 that this replicates to. I didn't fail over, but I used a separate homedir setup there and the same behavior repeated.
Microsoft had us test with IP and it worked properly. The thing is - we are not having any network name resolution issues and the workstations affected resolve to the correct IP. Further work with Microsoft and the network captures show the VNX responding but the traces show the VNX sends back to the client: NAS is responding with error code: SMB2: R - NT Status: System
- Error, Code = (58) STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND CREATE (0x5) ,
File=test\book1.xls:Zone.Identifier@#42
Microsoft think's it's the NAS and ENC thinks it's the workstation.
Any ideas? We have not been able to find anything that ties the PCs together with the issue vs those without. We have uninstalled software, re-installed Office, turned offline files off, nothing seems to work.

I also tested with a Unity 400 Homedir and the same behavior happens.
If you just use a plain smb share like a dept share, there is no problem there.
It also does not matter if you map to another drive letter or unc path - same behavior.

Hmmh - the SR reads like your problem is fixed in the meantime.
If that is not the case and you can reproduce I suggest you attach network traces to the SR and ask support to investigate and if necessary open an engineering bug

It's not fixed. It just keeps lingering.
I don't know if it's related, but now we are seeing some issues with Windows 10 and homedir. It's even odder behavior. Just renaming files in a subfolder of the home directory or modifying the file and trying to save it is causing the subfolder to disappear from the home directory.
Example:
I try to rename the file test.docx that is located in H:\action\2017
I get an error saying the directory is invalid.
Then the 2017 folder disappears on the workstation. H:\Action no longer has a folder "2017" in explorer or the cmd line.
after 10-30 minutes, the folder will re-appear.
I don't know what to think at this point.
It's hard to believe we are experiencing something unique here.
