Default VMFS blocksize ESX

Jump to solution

Is it possible to create VMFS volumes without the wizard on VNXe?

I mean now the  with Unisphere Manager the wizard automaticaly creates datastore on esx. But the blcoksize is by default 1MB. We want blocksizes of 8MB. Is it possible to create 8MB blocksize at initial configuration? Or else can you create LUN's on VNXe and attach them after the configuration to ESX.

You cannot create the VMFS Data store with 8 MB Block size initially from VNXe.

The workaround for changing the block size is as follows

  1. Create the VMFS data store from VNXe and then add it to VMWare.
  2. Delete the VMFS data store from VMWare.
  3. Click on add storage on VMWare and then you will get the option to change the block size.

Can we create LUN on VNXe without wizard? Nope. You can only create the Data store or any FS using the wizard only this is done for the ease of use.

In the newer code (2.1.0.14097) it will by default create it with 8MB block size

Rohan

Hi!

I think we can sparate it to 2 question:

1. Can we create LUN on Vnxe without wizard?

I suggest to check all the System and Storage options. Try to right click to storage.

2. Changing vmware default block size?

Vmware block size can be altered, after you created the datastore.

Please go to the ESX configuration tab, the click to the esx.

On the Hardware tab you will find storage.

I the add storage tab when you define the Datastore, you can define the block size of the datastore.

When the vnxe created the datastore with the wrong block size it you can delete it in this tab and add again.

I hope this is helps.

Unfortunately you cannot change block size from the VNXe.  If you delete the datastore from vSphere after the API creates it and then create a new one in vSphere with the same name with your required block size, you can still take advantage of the API.  Keeping the name the same allows subsequent deletes from Unisphere to also remove the datastore from vSphere.

You should also look at the new capabilities of VMFS 5.  Block sizes are defaulted to 1MB but all the limitiations are now gone.  Upgrading to Vsphere 5 is required of course.
