Empty VNXe 3100. Install OE

New to world of storage.  We have a VNXe 3100 that had no drives in it, they were removed and used elsewhere.  It's still under support contract and we want to use it.  After working w/ our reseller, I ordered 12 drives to fill it.  When the EMC support engingger arrived, he told me I need to order a Vault Pack w/ the OE on it.  I asked our reseller about this, who researched it, and sold us some Guru help to install the OE.  A different storage engineer w/ our reseller told me I can do it myself.

Is the OE something I can install myself?  What do you recommend?

Thank you

Dwight

I have done this before. The 1st 4 drives are usually the 'vault' drives. That is where the array OS is normally located.

In your case the vault drives have gone(they normally have yellow stickers) Emc Engineering have procedures to rebuild the vault drives. Need PC connected to the serial port of SPA and connected to cli. The SP will be in maintenance mode, and boots from internal ssd.

EMC ENGINEERING can webex remotely and rebuild the vault area. May need a local EMC field guy onsite to help out.

Note: this is an EMC Engineering process only.

So this is something our EMC CE should be able to do w/ a normal SR, correct?

Yes, but may be debatable whether it should be chargeable ..

We have some 'Guru Live' time purchased.  Would this be something they could work on?

Hello Dwight,

This is certainly something EMC support/engineering can help you with. The procedure has some prerequisites which CEs do not have access to. I request you to open a service request with EMC support.

Hey Dwight,

I also don't recommended customer to install VNXe OE directly. Please connect EMC 800 for further support.

Thanks for the replies.  I don't plan on installing the OE.  Does anyone know if a Guru Live services will cover the OE install, or will it need to be a different purchase?

Our reseller worked with EMC presales people who assurred them this is what I need.  I had an existing SR open w/ online support that says Guru Live is for basic configurations only and will not cover the OE install.

Which, if either, is correct?

Thanks for your replies.

Guru Live services are sold to new customers for initial setup/configurations which can be availed in the first 90 days of install.

This certainly 'does not' include OE Reinstall on the vault drives.

All new VNXe units are shipped with the vault drives and the OE preinstalled in the first 4 vault drives which should not be removed.

If for any reasons the vault drives are removed which means you have lost the OE (the VNXe software) this becomes a break fix issue and you have two options to get around this.

1 - Contact the EMC sales / reseller and get new set of vault drives with the OE preinstalled in it.

2 - If an SR is already opened EMC can try to do an OS reinstall on the existing drives which is a support/engineering procedure and 'cannot' be carried out by the CE.

Again this is something which is 'not part' of Guru Live Services but a break fix issue.

Chris.
