Migrate File Luns in VNX

Hi there,

I have a customer that has implemented block and file on the same Fast VP pool, he's now got a bit more budget and whats to split out the File element and put them on dedicated spindles.

Is there any issue with using background lun migration to moves these luns to the new disks?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi,

I think on file side it does not affect but on the block side it affects the performance so its recommendable to do it on non business hours.

Thanks

it's not a question of performance, it's a matter of is it supported. It is supported with certain caveats (pool protection type), i can't seem to locate the KB that explains these limitations.

Just search here – I think the KB article has been referenced a number of times in the forum

How the Data LUNs used by DMs are different than the lets say LUNs used by hosts? As far as I know there is none. I had pools where LUNs are carved from same pool for both DM and Hosts.

Page 87 - LUN Migration.

Remember this is high risk operation so make sure you have the backups.

Run a test with test pool before doing the production LUNs.

All standard LUN Migrations restrictions apply, hetro, homo, fast cache, raid type, etc. All restrictions and requirements should be in the document.

there is nothing in the document about using LUN Migrator on pool LUNs presented to datamovers.

LUN Migration - Nothing specific to File portion. When the VNX was initialized, the control LUNs should be already in vault drives that leaves only the data luns in pools.

so you are saying data LUNs presented from a "MIXED" pool can be migrated to a RAID-5 pool without any restrictions ? Again we are talking LUNs presented to VNX datamovers.

ok, apparently you are not familiar how sensitive AVM is to disk properties/protection.

Why don't you explain then?

ok, just confirmed with my SE, just like before with raid group you cannot use LUN migration where you are changing underlying protection (migrating between pool that use different protection), AVM gets confused.
