Replication between 3 sites

Hi,

I have 3 sites with VNX5200... Site A, Site B and Site C.

Site A to Site B = Dark Fiber (Sync distance)

SIte A to Site C = IP (Async distance)

Site B to Site C = IP (Async distance)

All 3 platforms have Essentials Suite licenses (all software enabled on VNX).

I would like to protect a LUN (or multiple LUNs) from site A in both site B and site C.

Can you please let me know what my options are knowing that i do NOT have any recoverpoint appliances?

Thanks

JS

Re: Replication between 3 sites

Besides RP your options are MV/S and MV/A (and maybe SANcopy)

I would suggest to start with the “EMC VNX replication technologies” white paper for an overview

Re: Replication between 3 sites

Thanks Rainer.

What would be the process to replicate 1 LUN to 2 sites?

Can i do:

MV/S from Site A to Site B and MV/A from Site A to Site C for the same LUN?

Or

MV/S from Site A to Site B and MV/A from Site B to Site C for the same LUN?

Thanks

Re: Re: Replication between 3 sites

I think Mirrorview can replicate a LUN to two other arrays. Check the MirrorviewKnownledgeBook.

Re: Replication between 3 sites

I believe it can only replicate 1 to 2 in SYNC MODE and 1 to 1 in ASYNC MODE

So Site A to Site B and Site C for SYNC (so all 3 sites should be within Sync distances)

Can someone please confirm or assist further?

Thanks

Re: Replication between 3 sites

Hello John,

You're right; the document attached by Glen mentions you can have a LUN fan-out ratio of 1:2 with MV/S LUNs (MV/S Consistency Groups are 1:1), and 1:1 with MV/A, so your plan will only work with MV/S LUN mirrors.

On the other hand, you can use a combination of technologies to get more or less your desired setup. Here's the interoperability table of MirrorView from the WhitePaper:

MV_Dependencies.PNG.png

So you can for example use full SAN Copy on the primary LUN, or incremental SAN Copy on the secondary. Or maybe create clones of MV secondary LUNs, then having a script which fractures the clones, then mirrors the fractured LUN to another array using MV, then recreate the clone.

The scripting option of using both clones and MV will have a lot of overhead and potentially high performance impact due to the number of simultaneous operations which will take place, as well as the difference in granularity of IO and transfer sizes.

I hope this helps,

Adham

Re: Replication between 3 sites

Thanks Adham!

I guess the following is my best bet:

Site A to Site B: Mirrorview/S

Site B to Site C: Incremental SAN Copy

Only issue here is bandwidth between Site B and Site C, which is gonna be a limitation in any technology that we use.

Do you have any documentation on how this can be set up?
