multiple interface one InitiatorName

Dear Community,

I am configuring my first iSCSI Block VNX 5300 with a Linux Host.

Storage - VNX 5300

Connectivity - iSCSI

Host OS - Linux

Using iSCSI and Powerpath.

I am able to manually register via Unisphere one of the interfaces along with the InitiatorName from /etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi.

When I try to manually register the second interface I am getting a message ( below )  -

SP B: Initiator record already exists.

I've uploaded a screen cap of error and configuration other interface registered.

You are adding same iSCSI initiator which is already register.

glen,

Note - the links you shared take me to a page not found.

I read prior to installation that multiple subnets were recommended but not required. SO, if I interpret your answer, I would need ETH4 on 192.168.100.154 and ETH5 on 192.168.101.155. If that is the case then on my network switch I would have two Vlans setup. Then connect respective ports from SPA and SPB to both vlans. Will the initiator names then be multiple and unique globally on the host?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The iSCSI specification is the issue. All NIC's on a single host will have the same IQN name by default - so each NIC will have the same IQN name. There is part of the name that also contains the IP address for each NIC, but sometimes that's ignored by software. That's what you want to use separate subnets for each NIC and separate subnets on the SP ports on the array.

Please see https://support.emc.com/kb/71615 CLARiiON and VNX: Facts, limitations, and recommended settings when using iSCSI for all information about iSCSI and the EMC arrays

kgoudus,

yes you are right but it is a different path to my host.

The setup is EHT4 192.168.100.154 and ETH5 192.168.100.155.

How do I register both paths with one initiator name?

Based on the response from glen I would have logically separate the paths from the host and SPs to vlans.

Sorry - that should have worked:

Try these

https://support.emc.com/kb/71615

https://support.emc.com/kb/41172

This is want we recommend:

EHT4 192.168.100 - SPA port 0

EHT4 192.168.100 - SPB port 1

ETH5 192.168.101 - SPA port 1

ETH5 192.168.101 - SPB port 0

Also, you should check out the mydocuments.emc.com site - go to VNX Series, then "Attach a Server" and follow the wizard to create an installation guide - pick iSCSI for the connection type.

Glen,

The links worked this time for me.

I am going through the "Attache a Server" document that was generated via the wizard and will let you know my findings. So far so good.

Understood on the recommendation for interface configuration but not clear on how that would alleviate the registration of two ip address with the same IQN. Hopefully the document and urls you provided will some clarity on that.

If you use the EMC Host Agent the Agent should register the initiators correctly on the array. If using ESX, it comes with its own Agent and should work the same.

For KB articles about the Host Agent, see KB
