VSPEX BLUE and vSphere Replication

Hi,

I don't see native vSphere Replication support on the EVO RAIL flavor in VSPEX BLUE.  Consider a VSPEX BLUE appliance as a target at a DR site and the source environment is a traditional built vSphere infrastructure which wants to use vSphere Replication to DR.

Is it possible to use a vSphere Replication OVF in the VSPEX BLUE appliance at DR for a validated vSphere Replication topology design (source VC target VC connection and DR datastore usage?

There seems to be some misunderstanding regarding "EMC validated", as VSPEX BLUE is not a reference architecture.

vSphere Replication is a feature included with vSphere Enterprise Plus that is part of the EVO:RAIL software bundle to OEM partners, and is supported by VSPEX BLUE from EMC.

Best regards,

Rieko

What you're suggesting could prove to work fine in reality, however that product vSphere Replication is not yet on the list of validated solutions for VSPEX Blue.

As of now, the list of validated VSPEX Blue Value-Add Software is as follows:

-EMC CloudArray Virtual Edition

-EMC RecoverPoint for VMs

-VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced (VDPA)

-EMC ESRS dial home

No word yet on whether they would ever add vSphere Replication to that list, since the EMC RecoverPoint for VMs offers the same VM-level backup solution with synchronous replication vs vSphere Replication's asynchronous replication which has RPO of 15 mins..

All of the management software which run on the VSPEX Blue appliance including the Value-Add Software, do all run on the appliance as VMs and are installed via OVA/OVF, so your idea could possibly work fine since the appliance really just consists of traditional vSphere underneath, but since it has not been EMC validated, it could come with some results not yet known.

Hope this helps

Considering "You can use vSphere Replication with certain editions of vSphere that include vSphere Replication in the license."

I guess it would be good to know if the VSPEX BLUE EVO:RAIL vSphere Enterprise Plus includes this license.  Even though it's not highlighted as RP4VM is supported and marketed.

Yes. VSPEX BLUE's virtualization layer is vSphere Enterprise Plus, which includes vSphere Replication as a feature and it is supported.

VSPEX BLUE includes RecoverPoint for VMs 15 VM license that provides additional capabilities. Customers who use RecoverPoint at their data centers are familiar with the product and typically prefer the per-VM replication capabilities provided by RecoverPoint for VMs.

Rieko,

I do agree that RP4VMs is a better solution but it's not necessary at the moment from a RPO perspective and also as the VSPEX BLUE may be used as a DR appliance in this scenario.

Not be to rude but is this information your providing validated by means of any integration/deployment/vLAB or informational document regarding the vSphere Replication as a supported feature in the VSPEX BLUE EVO:RAIL vSphere Enterprise Plus?

It seems we all agree logically it should work fine however as oliver801 mentioned above "but since it has not been EMC validated, it could come with some results not yet known." and this may be a risk to procure without 100% confirmation of both logical and practical support.

Yes, my apologies as I was misinformed. It makes perfect sense now because EMC does support the VMware software stack, so if VMware supports a software combination then of course EMC would stand behind that.

Thanks for clarifying that Rieko

Rieko,

You're very correct in mentioning that BLUE is not a reference architecture but Hyper.  Thanks for you confirmation and much appreciated.
