vCenter not responding to Dell Plugin

Our vcenter server is using port 444. Is this a problem if I put vcenterhost.domain.local:444? I have tried several different browsers, clearing the ssl cache, reinstalling vcenter on port 443 on a different server.  It just sits there for minutes and then may or may not get an error message. We are running v 1.5 on esxi 5 essentials. we have tried quite a few different things and not sure what else to try.  

In our searching I read of several potential solutions and we have tried all of them.

Adding the plugin site to your trusted locations in your browser, 
Clearing your ssl cache, 
Deleting temporary internet files or
Perhaps having a non standard port like us might be the issue.

 Any ideas?

I can ping vCenter from the Dell appliance CLI.  We have tried using FQDN:444 and IP:444 and also using Firefox.  Is there a firewall tool to make sure port 444 is being let through on the appliance?  Any more suggestions?

George, I am sorry to report that the prior post was incorrect. I talked with engineering and verified that only port 443 is supported. Changing ports is a new feature request that they will look at for a future release.

I know this sounds crazy but I reinstalled vcenter onto another computer with port 443.  same thing is happening. i can ping and everything but it just sits there.  What kind of troubleshooting can i do to figure where it is hanging up?

The only thing that I think it would work is to add a line in /etc/hosts file from the appliance.

For example,

 172.18.10.81 myhost.mydomain.com

the read only login doesn't seem to have rights to edit the /etc/hosts. i might be missing something, I'm not a linux guru by a long shot.

I actually think the dell appliance is connecting to vcenter but for some reason then disconnecting.  we have pretty much given up on this as an option which is unfortunate because we would like email alerts when something happens to one of our vmware servers.  unless anybody else has any ideas i will let it rest.

OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node 7.2 allows detecting vCenter using ip:port.  

ex: 192.168.1.1:444
