How to Temporarily Disable Your Firewall

When troubleshooting computer problems, you may be asked to disable your firewall.

Firewalls, should NOT be disabled as a routine before starting a fix. Your helper on the Malware Removal Forum will ask you to disable your firewall only if it is interfering with the cleanup procedures. Disabling unnecessarily will result in loss of protection to the system during the fixes, may cause a reinfection or even make things worse.

 
The Windows XP firewall and Windows Vista Firewall are built-in firewalls. Third party firewalls such as ZoneAlarm, Comodo, and others are installed separately.

 
The following are step-by-step instructions for disabling common third party firewalls.

 

AntiVir Premium Suite
Please navigate to AntiVir’s icon in the bottom right corner of the system tray.
    * Right-click on the icon-> Untick the option AntiVir Guard  Enable.
    * You will see a closed, white umbrella on a red background if you successfully disabled the AntiVir Premium Suite Guard.

AVG Antivirus Plus Firewall
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right-hand corner near your clock.
    * Right-click the icon for AVG-> Select Quit Control Center.
    * A warning will pop up > Click "Yes" to disable the firewall.

CA Personal Firewall
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right,
    * Right click the icon for CA Personal Firewall Guard-> mouse-over over the CA Personal Firewall menu option. A sub-menu will popup.
    * Please select "Disable CA Personal Firewall"
    * Unfortunately the system tray icon does not change,. If you want to double-check whether or not you successfully disabled the Firewall, would be to repeat the above steps  and look for "Enable CA Personal Firewall." If this is the case, then you successfully disabled the CA Personal Firewall Guard.

Comodo Firewall Pro (Free Personal)
    * Right-click the System Tray Icon.
    * Select Exit.
    * On the pop-up window, Click the Yes button to disable Comodo Firewall.

F-Secure Internet Security Suite
Navigate to the system tray on the bottom right-hand corner and look for the blue icon.
    * Right click that-> Select Unload.
    * Select: "Unload and allow all network traffic"
    * Select Unload to confirm deactivation of F-Secure Internet Security
    * You will be asked to enter your Parental Control Password. Please enter it and click "OK."
    * The F-Secure sign should now be surrounded by a red circle with a strike-through.

 

Jetico Personal Firewall
Please find the Jetico icon in the bottom right corner of  the system tray.
    * Right-click it->Select the option Shutdown Firewall to disable the Jetico Personal Firewall Guard.

 

Kaspersky Internet Suite
Please navigate to the system tray’s bottom right corner.
    * Right-click the Kaspersky icon-> Select Pause Protection.
    * Click -> By User Request
    * A popup will notify that protection is disabled.

Lavasoft Personal Firewall
Navigate to the bottom right corner of the system tray.
Look for the icon for your Lavasoft Firewall Guard.
    * Right click on that-> Select Exit.
    * You will see a popup alerting that you are no longer protected and will disable the Firewall. Click on "Yes” to disable the firewall.

Norton Internet Security
    * Please open Norton Internet Security Center by clicking the system tray icon.
    * Click on the tab "Norton Internet Security" and click on "Settings."
    * Click the Internet Usage option "Personal Firewall."
    * Click "deactivate".

Norton Personal Firewall       
Open Norton Personal Firewall main menu.
In the left pane, click Status & Settings.
Click Security.
Click Turn off.

 

Outpost Firewall Pro by Agnitum
Please find the Agnitum Outpost icon in the system tray’s right-hand corner.
    * Right-click it-> Select "Firewall Policy...".
    * Chose "Disable."
    * You will see a red circle with a white dot in the center in the system tray to signify  that you have successfully disabled the Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro Guard.

Panda Internet Security Suite
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign that looks like a Panda Bear head.

    * Right click the icon-> Choose "Close Automatic Protection.".
    * A message will pop up and warn you about disabling the protection. Choose "Yes."
    * The icon in the system tray will disappear to indicate that the Panda Internet Security Guard is disabled.

PC Tools Firewall Plus
Please navigate to the bottom right corner of the system tray.
Locate the PC Tools Firewall icon.
    * Right-click that->Click on the option “Disable Firewall”.
    * The icon will now show a red box with an X on it to signify that the firewall has been disabled.

 

Radialpoint Security Services
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right-hand corner where you will see the icon for grey-colored icon for Radialpoint.
    * Right-click the icon and select "Exit.".
    * A message will pop up to alert you about disabling protection. > Choose "Yes."
    * If you have successfully disabled the Radialpoint Security Services Guard, the icon in the system tray will disappear.

Sygate Personal Firewall
In the bottom right corner of the system tray you will see the icon showing up/down arrows for your Sygate Firewall.
    * Right-click on that-> Choose "Exit Firewall".
    * A message will pop up to notify you about disabling the protection. Select "Yes."
    * The icon in the system tray will now disappear to indicate that you have successfully disabled the Sygate Personal Firewall Guard.
