Computer infected with vundo trojan

I have a virus on my computer that McAfee identified as Trojan.Vundo, but cannot delete or quarantine.  I ran several programs to try to remove it, including McAfee, Windows Defender, and VundoFix, but they seem to either not be able to find the virus or can't get rid of it.  My computer has been very slow, with programs freezing often.  In addition, my McAfee has stopped working, and when I try to run a virus scan it pops up with an error; my windows updater no longer works, and my windows firewall is constantly turning itself off.  Also, I get random pop-ups in Internet Explorer (which I never use) all the time,  I have fake tray icons and programs which installed themselves on my computer, and whenever I try to download any fixes on my computer the file types get changed to "changed for your protection" or something along those lines.  Here is my HJT log, please help.

Once your system is hit with Vundo, reformat and reload Windows - it's the only sure way to get rid of it.

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. Definition of cracked software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. There is a list here:    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19241146/19367569.aspx#19367569

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

* Please update MBAM, run a scan, and post the log in your next reply.

I look forward to your reply so we can begin cleaning.

Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a HijackThis log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Although we appreciate his trying to help, please be aware that husky0894 is not listed as a graduate of the malware removal schools that we contacted. Furthermore, it is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.  I will be continuing with this one.

I have not posted to another forum.  I have no cracked software or P2P programs on the computer.  It is my computer.

As per the System Restore and the MBAM, I tried several times to get MBAM to run, including running windows in safe mode, but it did not work.  I then realized I had system restore disabled, and when I tried to run windows in normal mode again, windows continues to run in safe mode.  It does not matter that I tell it "start windows normally", when my desktop loads it is in safe mode and cannot enable system restore.  My computer is now continuously freezing and not allowing programs to load.  On top of this, my ISP called me and informed me that they detected a "Sasser Worm" on my computer.  I don't know what to do.

I see a trojan problem but I do not see Sasser.  If you are keeping your anti-virus and Windows updated I find it hard to believe Sasser is on there. What details did your ISP give you for finding that? Are you sure it was your ISP calling?

Do you have access to a clean computer so if necessary you can download tools to a USB stick or burn them to a CD to transfer to the infected computer?

Can you get into Safemode with networking on the infected computer?

December 5th, 2008 09:00

I am sure that it was the ISP, but I'm not sure where they got that from.  They also sent an e-mail, but simply said they detected the Sasser worm on my computer.

I do have access to a clean computer (in fact, that is what I am using to talk to you since I am afraid to turn the internet on on the other computer)

I tried a few times to open in Safe Mode with Networking, but the computer kept freezing before windows could fully load.  The first time I tried I clicked on the user, and after the pop up box came up asking if I was sure I wanted safe mode, it stopped doing anything.  The next few times it froze before loading the users.  Everything that it did do, however, looked exactly like regular Safe Mode.

I have been having a difficult time posting at Dell today while they work on their new forums software. If I do not reply to your posts within 48 hours, it is because of site performance problems. After 48 hours without a reply, an option would be to post your updated logs at SpywareHammer with ATTN: Bugbatter in the title so I see your post.

As long as you have access to a clean computer please download MBAM.  Use this update link here to manually download the update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to buggystuff.exe or something silly.

Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the file to the infected computer. Install the "buggystuff.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

  • Then click Finish.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
    • manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
    • Include a fresh HijackThis log. You will need to use that UCB stick to transfer the losg back for posting here.

Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.

December 5th, 2008 21:00

I tried that, but the computer will not run MBAM.  I installed and updated it, but the program will not launch.  I tried several times.

Did you rename MBAM before transferring it?

December 6th, 2008 13:00

I renamed the installed and the updater before transferring them, yes.  Both of those worked in terms of installing the program, but once it was installed i could not run it.

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1

Link 2

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray.

Otherwise, they may interfere with running ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the following text between the lines below.

Do not copy the dotted lines.

** Make sure you copy/paste ALL the text at once. Do not try to edit extra spaces.

It will copy correctly to Notepad if you highlight and copy as is.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

File::
c:\windows\system32\ddcArPHA.dll
c:\windows\system32\lanyngcolub.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ddcArPHA]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Save this as CFScript.txt

Photobucket

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

You will be prompted to run Combofix again.

Follow the same instructions you did before for running ComboFix.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix while it is running. It may cause it to stall.

When finished, a log is produced here: C:\ComboFix.txt

In your next reply, please post that log along with a new HijackThis log. Let me know how things are running.
