Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

I have been trying to do a PC Scan and it downloads.  Then it says it is downloading Trend Active Update.  Then I get this message:

Trend Active Update Did Not Update Successfully.  If may result from busy server or bad network traffic.
Error Code: 28
Error String: Generic Source Network Failure

Does anyone know if they are having a problem or could my firewall be blocking it.  I've been trying for several days.

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

Could be your firewall. My Windows XP SP2 Firewall asked me if I wanted to allow the applet.

Also could be a corrupt 016 ActiveX for the TM applet. Fix check it in HJT and reboot and try again. It should look similar to this in Hijackthis:

O16 - DPF: {74D05D43-3236-11D4-BDCD-00C04F9A3B61} (HouseCall Control) - http://a840.g.akamai.net/7/840/537/2004061001/housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/xscan53.cab

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

Well, something happened.  I tried your suggestion but it still doesn't work.  But now I get a Windows update error when I checked for updates.  I also get an error message when I close IE.

My connection box keeps coming up to connect, all the time.  We haven't been able to find out why.  When I posted my hijackthis report, it looked fine.  So it doesn't seem to be pests.  Should I go back to IE5.5 and reinstall 6?  Zone alarm is not blocking. Yet the error message for Microsoft is (0x80072F76). This is starting to drive me crazy.

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

basketrage,

See if this article might help while I check your log for problems. I know your probably not running ZAPro but it talks about cookies and otherthings that might be causing the problem - like privacy settings.

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

As an old friend used to say: Don't forget to give KB a look:

BTW...I think your Propel software could also be a culprit in conflicts.

Don't go back to IE 5.5.

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

Propel was the culprit for MS but not for Trend.  Thanks!

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

Thanks, Mike.  That article made the difference.  When I lowered Internet Security to Medium, everything worked including MS updates.  It was not Propel.

 I was always using the free version of Zone Alarm.  I thought for one year I would use the ZA Internet Security.  Since my connection box keeps coming up to connect, I thought it would be a good idea to use something different.  So I uninstalled AVG anti-virus and the ZA free version.  Well, I think that was a mistake.  I will never PAY for another security program again. The free versions did a great job, I just didn't know it or appreciated it.  Also, Zone Alarm has not answered any of my emails.  I will always come here first if I have problems in the future.  My ISP, Propel, and you all at Dell forums have given so much valuable info.  Thanks!!!  I had Symantec installed when I bought the computer but their updates messed up my computer and they also never answered emails and refused to give my money back.  Since then, most of my friends stay away for them as well.

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

basketrage,

Your welcome. Just glad to hear you got it resolved. ZA acted up on me for some strange reason, doing the exact same thing, but seemed to clear up when I installed the next available upgrade.

Norton's has been a big disappointment for me as well. They're very intelligent people, I just think they're trying to hard to produce a 'do everything' product and it really fouled up the works. The only reason I keep it installed now, it to try and answer problems other users are having with it; they're manuals are even worse!

Good job on getting it working!

Re: Having trouble doing Trend Houscall PC Scan

basketrage,

I think the latest windows updates are messing with internet explorers settings. I am seeing alot of issues with MusicMatch. You might consider adding Trend to your Trusted websites. Below is an example of adding Trusted sites.

* Click Start- Control Panel- Internet Options
* Click the Security tab
* Click the green Trusted Sites icon
* Look down and right and click the Sites button
* Remove the check from "Require server verification https:..."
* Add this site:
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm
* Click Add
* Add this site:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
* Click Add
* Add this site:
http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck
* Click Add
* Click Apply and/or OK
