Hundreds of thousands may lose Internet in July

WASHINGTON (AP) — For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

In a related article, PCMagazine's Fahmida Y. Rashid explained how to go about identifying and removing the malware from your computer over a month ago.  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401227,00.asp

Anyone who thinks he may be infected should get the problem diagnosed and cleaned as suggested in Rick's post above. Beware that if using a search engine for information on this, there may be some untrustworthy sites offering help. How can you tell if a site has a bad reputation? Web Of Trust , uses colored alerts to warn you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for over 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Red for Warning = STOP
  • Yellow for Use Caution
  • Green for Safe
  • Grey for Unknown
