Malwarebytes problems with Windows 10 2004

In numerous reports to the Malwarebytes support forums since Windows 10 version 2004, the May 2020 Update, was released, users are reporting many problems with MBAM 4.1 installed.

These issues range from random freezes, general slowness, video stuttering, blue screen of death crashes (BSOD), or Windows 10 becoming unresponsive.

[Stress that] not everyone running Windows 10 2004 seems to be affected,

Malwarebytes has released a Windows Beta version 4.1.1.71 in early June that appears to resolve this issue.

I  should think another workaround would be to uninstall the May Windows 2004 version, rather than rely on a Malwarebytes beta fix;

I can confirm that my 1909 version has no problems with MB4.

Malwarebytes acknowledges performance issues on devices running Windows 10 v2004

saying it "seems to be related to conflicts with our Ransomware Protection."

Just to note that one of my Win 10 systems automatically downloaded/installed Version 2004 just after this thread started. (I had forgotten to delay the Special Features update beyond 35 days). I actually had no problems with MB4, but chose to uninstall V. 2004 and revert to V. 1909 for another reason:

With V 1909 one could delay feature updates (such as new versions) for up to one year. With V 2004 this delay was quietly reduced to only 35 days, the same maximum delay for security updates. I have lost a lot of faith in all MS feature updates, which increasingly cause a lot of grief.

I was easily able to revert to V. 1909 with no problems, and can once again delay feature updates for one year. And MB4 works as always.

YMMV

Malwarebytes has just released version  4.1.2.73 (with component update 1.0.972) which should be addressing the Window 10 2004 incompatibility issues.

The MalwareBytes issues with Win10 20-04 has finally been fixed with component update 1.0.990, released on (or about) 22 July.  https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/257102-malwarebytes-41/?tab=comments#comment-1396220

As it was a "boring" Sunday, I decided to finally go for the 20-04 Win10 update... I had been holding-off, as there were many other issues with it (most of which have now been resolved).

The update took about FIVE (5) hours!   Several reboots.   Fortunately, everything seems to be working well.

Thanks, ky. I have updated my MB4 to the latest components, which continue to work well with my Win 10 v.1909 on all my machines.

As the spring Win 10 v2004 feature was not a security update, I reviewed the new features offered listed here:
https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/229971/whats-new-in-windows-10-version-2004

I must confess I saw no glaring advantages that would apply to me, and given recent problems with MS updates I was reluctant to relinquish the one year deferral for feature updates (available in version 1909) for the limited 35 day deferral (in v2004).

That it took you so long to download/install v 2004 reinforces my bias that these new versions are almost the equivalent of a new operating system. Over 20 years, I always waited at least one to three years before changing to the latest OS. I never regretted that philosophy, that lets others work out the bugs. Thus I am very comfortable waiting a year to install the latest version.

I could be misguided ...

Having used Win10 20-04 for about 2 weeks now, I just wanted to mention that Sandboxie will not run anymore... its driver starts but then stops.   I've seen other reports confirming this... but I can't assert that ALL Sandboxie users have been so impacted.

FWIW, I'm using an older version of Sandboxie, 5.28.

@ky331  - Just a thought...Have you tried running the Win 10 v2004 compatibility troubleshooter on your "older" of version Sandboxie?

Just another example of Microsoft taking total control over everything and trying to push competitors out of the way...

Sandboxie itself is no longer company supported... it's gone open source...

and another author has "sprouted" its own forked version.

Ron,

As best as I can tell, I tried running it in compatibility mode, trying win8 and win7, and it made no difference.   The underlying Sandboxie service keeps stopping, so Sandboxie won't run.   I don't think it has anything to do with me running an older version of Sandboxie... rather, I think Win10 20-04 upgraded its own sandboxing features (which were introduced in May 2019), effectively disabling Sandboxie from running.

I don't consider it a significant loss for me, as I rarely run Sandboxie any more (even though I believe it offers some great protection for the "carefree" surfer).

Just to note that Sandboxie (latest version) still works well with Win 10 v 1909. I continue to find it useful for web surfing.

Has anyone any info on a better free sandbox, VPN or other strategy?

FWIW, Bo Elam (who appears to be the Sandboxie expert) asserts that Sandboxie 5.33.6 "is working well with W10 19041.264 (2004)".

So perhaps, it's something else blocking others any myself.

I just upgraded my Sandboxie (from 5.28) to 5.33.6 [obtained from MajorGeeks, which did not require any "registration" or legal agreement to TOS as required at the Sandboxie site], and I am happy to report that it IS running, apparently well, under Windows 10: 20-04
