Many Pop ups need some help/hijack log posted

I hve been having problems with pop ups, as of late.  I have McAfee and I have it set to block pop ups, but I am getting a lot more pop ups lately.  I believe my computer has been hijacked.  I am posting a log.  I am not too computer savy, so I would appreciate detailed instructions on the next step in the process after posting my log. The instructions for downloading the hijack this set up were great, by the way!

F-Secure should have completed just fine. The fact that it did not may indicate more malware. Please go back to the Panda site, scan there and post the log. You shouldn't be bothered this time with so much spyware showing in the Panda log after the AVG scan. How's the computer running for you now?

Of the items flagged by Panda, two Lop infected files were located in your Local Settings Temp folder. Lop typically targets those "Documents and Settings" folders so I'm skeptical that you were successful in removing the Lop infection when combining those findings with the fact that you had a failure when running the F-Secure scan.

Your HijackThis log however does NOT show the Lop.com infection running but that can be deceptive...depending on quite a few variables. We still won't know until you submit the HijackThis "Startup List Log". What you submitted with your last post was the "Uninstall" list although you called it the startup list.

With your next post, please do this:

Open Hijackthis, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
Next to "Generate StartupList log", place a check next to "List also minor sections" (full) and "List empty sections (complete).
Then click "Generate StartupList log"
Click "Yes" to the box that pops-up.
Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears back here along with a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks!

Sir,
 
I did want to mention something else to you at this point.  I was going to check into later because I think it has an easier fix than the problems with the adware.  It may have some connection to all of this.  Initially before I started posted on the message board I realized I had some problems.  I did try to see what programs were starting up.  I went into the start up menu, by going to run - typed msconfig and then unchecked a few things to try to see if that would help the problem.  (I didn't really know what I was doing obviously.)  I just remembered that from a service call I made about a Compaq computer I was having trouble with some time ago.  It has caused a slight problem because now when I start the computer the real player comes up and actually opens on start up.  Also a gray error box comes up and then I just close it and the real player. I can't remember what the error messages says... something to the effect of bootup error.   It doesn't cause any problems after I close the error message and the real player.  It is just annoying for it to come up every time at start up.

This log looks clean. With all the problems you had, I'm certain there is quite a bit of disk clutter and fragments causing problems...especially with boot time. Opening some applications may also be delayed somewhat as a result so we need to tidy up a bit and sort things in their proper order.

If you have more than one drive you can follow these instructions below for each drive, substituting the drive letter in each instance:

Delete Cookies

*Note*
Deleting ALL cookies will require you to log back into any web sites you visit that required you to log on with a user ID and password.

You CAN be selective here and keep the good cookies if you think you know which ones they are. I recommend deleting "All" cookies in order to remove any problems that may be present.
If you elect to delete All cookies, you will find there are a couple that Windows will not permit you to delete. This is normal as there are a few files (from your most recent log on session) that are in use by the operating system. You will also find a few Windows Temp files in use by the system
  • Click Start-->Run and Type Cookies then click OK.
  • Click "Edit" from the menu at the top then scroll to and click on:
    Select All

    Next, click "File" from the menu at the top. Scroll to and select Delete

    Return to your desktop.

Delete the Contents of the Prefetch Folder
  • Click Start-->Run and Type Prefetch then click OK.
  • Click "Edit" from the menu at the top then scroll to and click on:
    Select All
    Next, click "File" from the menu at the top. Scroll to and select Delete

    Return to your desktop

Delete Windows Temp Files
It is important to pay attention here to what files may remain after you click "Delete". There are some windows temp files that the system will not allow you to delete which is normal. You should have only two or three files that remain. Please select what files remain (a few at a time) and delete everything that windows will allow you to delete.
  • Click Start-->Run, and Type Temp then click OK.
  • Click "Edit" from the menu at the top then scroll to and click on:
    Select All
    Next, click "File" from the menu at the top. Scroll to and select Delete

    Return to your desktop

Delete User Temp Files
  • Click Start-->Run, and Type %Temp% then click OK.
  • Click "Edit" from the menu at the top then scroll to and click on:
    Select All
    Next, click "File" from the menu at the top. Scroll to and select Delete
    Return to your desktop


Delete other Unnecessary Files
  • Click Start-->My Computer-->Right Click on C:/ Drive
  • Select "Properties" then click the Disk Clean-Up button.
    Select everything Except for "Office Set-Up Files" (if present) and "Compress Old Files". Click "OK".

Run CHKDSK
  • Click the "Tools" Tab. Under Error Checking click the "Check Now" button. Under Check Disk Options put a check in Both boxes then Click Start. Click Yes then Click OK and reboot the system.

This first reboot after you've completed the cleanup session will take a bit longer than usual. Let your system stabilize with no intervention... DO NOTHING WITH YOUR COMPUTER AT THIS TIME

Allow the scan to complete. Upon completion, windows will reboot the system again.

When the system comes back up and has stabilized (watch for the light on your CPU tower to stop blinking or at least slow to a crawl...this may take maybe 3 minutes or so) then continue with these instructions below:

Click Start-->All Programs-->Accessories, and select The Command Prompt again.

Copy and paste the following text at the C :\...> Prompt, and press the ENTER key.
defrag c:

You should be shown an anlysis of the fragmented files...the cursor should drop down and return to the left side of the screen. It will just blink continuously and may appear to you that nothing is happening but windows is running the defragmentation utility through the system command. Allow the defragmentation to complete. When it completes, your cursor will return to it's normal "Ready" position. It will most probably look like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>(or your log on user name that you assigned yourself) and the cursor will be blinking again as it is positioned at the end of that file path named above.

When you see that, then the fragmentation utility has finished. Close the Command Prompt window and reboot the computer again to properly record the changes to the disk. Post back and let us know how the computer is running for you now and if you are having any other issues. Thanks!

Sir,
 
I did all of the tasks except defrag.  I noticed I am still having the problem with the real player after I rebooted for the last step of CHDSK.  Is that something you can help me with?  As I stated earlier I know I had done this by trying to change the start up programs.  I tried to correct, but am having difficulty with this.  Here is what happens:
 
After the computer comes up, the real player opens.  It plays nothing.
Then an error window comes up and says:  ! Unable to establish a connection with the server.
http:// SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER.
 
When I click the error message it closes and then I close the real player and everything is fine. 
 
When I have attempted to change the start up programs again, after I try to change the real player, to not make it come up at start up, it says I need to log on as administrator.  I am not sure how to do that... except in the safe mode, as you instructed me on the other problems. 
 
Can you tell me the exact steps to possibly correct this problem, so the real player doesn't come up on start up with this error?

Realplayer is what I call pesterware (quicktime is another one). These applications sometimes forcibly install themselves on your computer, intentionally making themselves hard to find and harder to eliminate, and annoy you every time you start your computer. They are not considered malware and really perform nothing with malicious intent except for the annoyances they create. The program will also load a "SmartStart" or more recently, "StartCenter" application on start-up that will needlessly display the RealPlayer logo in your task tray and waste memory.

Why do these programs subversively install themselves into your computer's Startup files so they continually pester you, over and over, every time you reboot? Ususally as some form of promotion or advertising--it will either install a program that somehow makes someone else money when you use it, or install some kind of stub that will beg you and beg you and beg you to install such a program.

You have several options. Uninstalling it of course is one. If you can't seem to live without it, then try this:
- Launch RealPlayer
- Click on the Tools and choose Preferences
- Under the Automatic Services category, choose Message Center
- Press the button marked "Configure Message Center"
- UNCHECK the option labeled Checking - Check for new messages
- Choose Yes when the warning pops-up

If you haven't already, run MSCONFIG to remove it from your startup configuration as well, but please be advised...as soon as you use this application again, you will find it in your startup directory again on your next reboot.

There are startup applications that will remove this software with one click but again, each time you use it, it will return and the startup manager will again ask you if you want to "OK" the new startup entry it detected again.

The best advice is to uninstall it. If you run across some video that will only play by using those types of applications you probably don't need to see it anyway.

Hello sir,
 
Just wanted to let you know I have completed all of the tasks in the last message, of your instructions, including the defrag.  The Real Player problem is also fixed thanks to your help.  I kept the real player, but it is not coming up with an error at start up.  Of course even before the final steps of cleaning out and defragging, the pop up problem went away.  The computer is running really well, since the last steps of cleaning out the files and the defrag.  I just wanted to say one more time thanks for your time, patience and excellent instructions.

You're welcome indeed...just glad we could help. We downloaded some tools for this fix that you should now delete:
You can delete Microsoft Task Scheduler (jt.exe), and the killjobs.bat that's on your desktop.

Now that your system is clean and running the way you expect, let's create a new restore point you can refer to if the need should arise at some time in the future.

Please click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore"
In the new window, check the 'Create a restore point' in the right pane and click "Next".
In the "Restore point description" textbox, name your restore point to something you will easily recognize. I recommend something like yyyymmdd_Clean (ex. 20060101_Clean)
Click "Create" and reboot your computer.

There's a few more things you can do to help prevent spyware infections:

Immunize your browser by installing Spywareblaster. What does it do?
  • Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

Keep your anti-virus and spyware definitions up to date. Be sure to scan often.

Below you can choose from several of the freeware Firewalls available on the public domain. Even though you may have a Firewall already installed, keep this list handy should you choose not to renew your subscription for whatever reason.

You should always have at least ( but not more than ) one of these types of third party firewalls running on board:
Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
Outpost Free

Stay updated with the most recent Windows patches using
Microsoft's Windows Update.

Using an alternate browser can reduce your chance of certain infections installing themselves. We recommend installing Mozilla Firefox. If you don't already have "Firefox", please consider installing and using this browser for surfing. Remember to keep Internet Explorer as your default browser so there will be no interference with your Windows Automatic Updates.

If you still wish to use Internet Explorer, please make sure you install SpywareBlaster (from above) to protect you from most ActiveX infections.

Run CCleaner often. Download the Basic or Slim version unless you WANT the Yahoo Toolbar.
Or if you just want to run your on board Disk Cleanup ("Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup" ), just open the utility and check off the following:
Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files

So how did I get infected in the first place?
