MyPal Browser for ** XP ** (and beyond)

First off, let me stress that I do ***NOT*** advocate anyone going "back" to XP at this time... official support ended several years ago.

With that being said, for anyone who still maintains an XP system:   I just "discovered" a browser which runs on XP, and is still supported (to the extent possible, given any limitations forced upon it by the XP operating system).   It's called MyPal, and it's based on PaleMoon.

Mypal is a current and maintained Windows XP web browser. Mypal is based on Moonchild Productions' Pale Moon code, which itself was forked from Mozilla's FireFox code several years ago, but is also maintained and kept current. The goal of Mypal is to provide a current, secure, and reliable web browser for Windows XP.   Mypal operates identically to Pale Moon with some minor exceptions.

https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal/releases

They offer both a 32-bit as well as 64-bit version.   The current version is 28.7.1.

I've only been testing/using it for a day so far, but it appears to be a welcome addition to XP, given that IE, FF, and PM are no longer supported there.

Absolutely would NOT recommend a browser from outside corporate sandbox.

Firefox ESR still works.

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32/

File Firefox Setup 52.9.0esr.exe 43M 25-Jun-2018 08:56
LAST VERSION 52.9.0esr/

Firefox version 52.9.0esr was the last supported release for Windows XP and Windows Vista. No further security updates will be provided for those systems.

Hi ky331,
I appreciate your comments as I am looking for a browser that works for my WinXP Home 32 bit.  I am using a Dell 3000 desktop...love it to death.  My good friend since 2006!  Lately I am getting blocked on too many websites, basically security mis-matches and the like.  I know I am out of date, but hoping to keep XP alive ....somehow!

Right now, it's just a matter of trust when downloading. And I don't know who to trust. So far I have looked at Baidu, UC Browser, Epic and K-Mellon and cannot decide. Ruled out Baidu as I was informed it comes from China.   Then I saw MyPal browser and that led me to your remarks. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your thoughts.  Any tip other that what you have said would be nice.   I just created a Dell acct:  my nickname is:  navaid3.

Kind regards.

The current version of MyPal is 28.8.4 (but I believe that 28.9.0 will be released "very soon").

I'm not sure how much important/"sensitive" work (if any) you do on XP --- I also have a Win10 system as my primary workstation.

I don't know your level of expertise, and how comfortable you are "tinkering" with things.   But here are a few thoughts you might consider:

I've added two security-related extensions to MyPal:

https Alwayshttps://addons.palemoon.org/addon/https-always/

uBlock Origin:   https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock-for-firefox-legacy/releases

You can decide for yourself if you'd like to try/use either.   uBlock origin serves to block some "bad" sites, as well as many advertising sites.   (Be advised that some sites will detect the ad-blocker, and tell you that you need to disable it to view that site...)

--------------

These next 2 items are slightly more technical, and you have to decide if you feel comfortable implementing/using them:

I've also disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1 (but be careful if you do so, and remember it, just in case you ever need to view a site that doesn't support the newer protocols):   https://helgeklein.com/blog/2020/03/disable-tls-1-0-and-1-1-in-firefox-now/

I'm also using MalwareBytes Anti EXPLOIT Beta, in which you must manually add MyPal.exe to the list of SHIELDED items.  https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/205865-malwarebytes-anti-exploit-113-build-146-released-feb-18-2020/

---------------------------

Finally, I trust that you're using SOME anti-virus which is still XP-compatible, obtaining signature/definition updates on at least a daily basis.

Hello ky331,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciate that.

Probably the most sensitive things I do on the computer is accessing bank accounts, credit card companies, health plan.

I can easily implement the technical things that you mentioned.

I use the latest Chrome browser that supports XP, v49.0.2623.112 (about 3 years old) I am using the Ad Blocker Plus extension with it, which is awesome.

The number of websites I cannot access is growing all the time due to "rc4 security suite cipher mismatches." I understand there is no remedy for this. Perhaps the MyPal browser would be sufficient to overcome this.

I have disabled TLS 1.0 and 1.1

I am using AVG as an antivirus program. Even so, there are several features of it that won't work with XP. But the main program and file scanner are still working for XP, which I am grateful for.

Can you recommend a reliable site for downloading MyPal?

Take care.

Hi ky331,

I may have answered my own question in my last note to you.  I think I stumbled upon a reliable source for the MyPal browser:   https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal

They appear to be the source of MyPal.  New at this, taking time to figure it all out.

Must take a break from this task for a while...will return to it tonight.  If all goes well, I will let you know so you can share with others.  G'day!

If your question was simply to find a "reliable" site from which to download MyPal, the github - Feodor2 website link was included in my ORIGINAL post that started this thread.

Thanks ky331,

Got the installer  for MyPal 28.8.4   32 bit downloaded.   Whoo hoo.   Did take note of the two add-ons you mentioned.

Also looked up Sandboxie, a term I was not familiar with.   I think I understand sandboxing concepts...neat.

Hope you stay well,

Hi speedstep,

Thanks for the Firefox suggestion.  Just downloaded MyPal but not yet installed.  It appears that MyPal is being updated regularly...good sign!   While perusing the web regarding Firefox ESR , I found comments that developers are not reliable with updating?

Anyways, I am excited about keeping my XP alive.   I swear it opens programs faster than Win7 thru 10.  I have a few GPS units and a few other gems which are year 2000 vintage and software associated with them.  So for simplicity, it would be nice to keep XP viable.

Thanks for your comment,

Regards,
navaid3

SandboxIE is the name of one particular program that can be used to run other programs in a sandbox.

However, that program is now available under "restricted information" control, and there's a formal consent form you have to fill-out and agree to before they allow you to download it.   So for what it's worth, I'm still sticking to Sandboxie v.5.28 --- having not obtained any newer updates.   I still use it occasionally, for example, if I need to access a link that I'm not comfortable accessing in a "normal" browser.

While I personally have not tested Vista, I do believe it should work there, as Vista is newer than XP.

It's listed as Vista-compatible at Major Geeks:  https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/mypal.html

Hi Helogigs,

It supports XP to Win 10.  I'm glad I found it.  Only one problem so far:  won't let me log into one financial institution.
