No Icons...only background

Problem:

Running Windows XP. I originally kept getting the blue screen of death. I was able to start in safe mode with networking. In safe mode I recieved a background that said my computer was infected. Also, received pop-ups when a started Firefox saying my computer was infected...click here to fix. I didn't click of course. I was able to downloaded NORTON 360, which uninstalled Macafee that was originally installed. Ran NORTON and found six items:

SafeStrip

Adware.Hotbar

Tracking Cookie

Trojan.Vundo

Trojan Horse

Trojan.Dropper

NORTON said all items were resolved. I restarted and attempted a normal boot. Was able to login, but after entering my password, only my background appeared...no icons. Waited 60 minutes with no joy. Attempted to boot in safe mode, but only got to the black screen with safe mode. Then did ctrl, alt, delete and run explorer.exe. That is how I'm operating now to post on this website.
