OpenOffice to shut-down???

OpenOffice could shutdown soon http://news.thewindowsclub.com/openoffice-could-shutdown-85918/

Despite its popularity, the possibility is there that it could go the way of the dinosaurs in a matter of months. This is not because of money, but due to the community no longer supporting it on a large scale. Many could have seen this day coming from a mile away ever since Libre Office came on the scene... The issue, from what we have come to understand, most developers have chosen to support Libre Office instead. Without these talented developers, the OpenOffice team is finding it difficult to fix bugs and release new features.

Lack of volunteer contributors could mean the end for OpenOffice  http://www.neowin.net/news/lack-of-volunteer-contributors-could-mean-the-end-for-openoffice

The OpenOffice productivity suite is at serious risk of being shut down. The software has had very few recent updates with the most recent stable point revision (4.1.2) released in October 2015 and only three updates in total since 2013. A major security flaw in July took a month to be patched with the project at the time suggesting switching to Microsoft Office or LibreOffice as workarounds.

Remark:  http://www.libreoffice.org/ remains a viable [and FREE] alternative.   EDIT:  In fact, they just released a new build,  5.2.1, today:   https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2016/09/07/4420/

"And another one bites the dust"  First it was Star Office which begat Open Office and now it is Libre Office, Not even the Shadow  knows what it will be tomorrow!  Even with the software being free, the cost of switching certainty isn't.

Keep in mind that, even if (when) OpenOffice "shuts down" their company, the program will still continue to run as is has been.   Granted, there will be no more updates, no NEW features added.   But, unless/until a "critical" vulnerability is announced [and remains unpatched], it should be safe to continue using.

And after that, one can always switch to LibreOffice.

You are replying to a THREE YEAR OLD post, which speculated that OpenOffice might close down, due to lack of support.   The program had been making annual releases.   In contrast, LibreOffice was enjoying a lot of support, releasing many updates throughout the year.

Suffice it to say, nothing has changed:   OpenOffice is still around, and has just released a new annual update, 4.1.7.   LibreOffice is "flourishing", and continues to release numerous periodic updates.

I continue to use OpenOffice, "out of familiarity".   But if I didn't have either one, I think I'd start with LibreOffice instead.
