Qhost.apd and Dailup connection

I acquired the Qhost virus on 12/11/04. I got the virus deleted, but it left a command that when it sense the activation of the dialup on the Dell sign in, it switches the internet properties connections from Never dial a connection to dial Whenever a network connection is not present.  And the in Settings for Default and LAN Settings it unchecks Automatically detect settings and checks  Use a proxy server for this connection (These settings will not apply to other connections) and in the advance Proxy Settings it puts in a Proxy Address to use under  HTTP 127.0.0.1 Port 9022 and also in the Exceptions box. In LAN Settings it will put after thee address in the Exceptions box localhost. So every time I log on the dial up I pull up Internet Options and reset the whole connection properties and remove what it puts in. The Address it puts in is what the Qhost.apd virus dose. I have clean and deleted, disinfected all viruses and upgraded my firewall. I have Windows XP 2. I need to find out how to remove this command with out reformatting the drive.

Boltar,

How did you remove it? Using Norton's utility?

Mike.

No, First it was McAfee Virusscan would delete it, but it would rewrite itself. I found it hiding in system32/drivers/etc. I moved it to a new folder. Then dumped it. But it would come back. I then Downloaded Bitdefender online, that also deleted somemore of it and some others too. Also I ran a Superdat (sdat4416.exe) McAfee with clean.bat. to verify it was gone. I haven't received anymore alerts from Mcafee that I had a virus and it deleted it. The Qhost would appear to Mcafee on reboot of the computer. It hasn't shown up since. Just the annoying command on rewriting the connections of internet properties. I don't know if that answers your Question Mike.

Boltar,

Ok. Symantec reports to have developed a removal tool. I didn't know if you'd tried it yet.

Well, I tried that tool and it did not detect the Qhost  virus. It just left that command line which it could not find. After I ran the tool, and Dialed up the Dell Sign in to the internet,  connections were switched again. So! I need to find the Command line it left. Or A driver line * *.exe. Thanks for the Tool.

Boltar,

Ok. Was there any info in your hjt log that would help find the culprit?

Mike.

Boltar,

Remember i'm just trying to help.

Trojan.Qhosts cannot spread by itself. For a computer to become infected, you would have to open an HTML page that contains code, which allows the Trojan to open a viral HTML file on the target computer, so that the script can create and run the malicious executable.

-----

Did anything in a hjt log, either in an Rx, or O16 line show any indications of a downloader? Did you clear the internet caches and all the offline content?

Mike.

No, As I said in my first log, The Qhost.apd drops the redirection to the localhost (127.0.01) and reorganizes the connections tab in internet properties. When I first was infected, I looked up Recent Threats on Mcafee and typed in the Qhost.apd and it told me what it will do. Which it did. The Qhost is dropped off by the W32/Gaobot.worm which I had also, and is gone. Now I must find the redirection command.

Boltar,

Ok, there's a few problems still there. One of which might be causing the program. Let's see if this will fix the program your having...

Download, then unzip to " C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.0. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution ( if provided in this post). This version has features that might help in 'cleaning' up your system.

Now, let's run HiJackThis, then:

1.  click " Config..."
2.  click " Misc Tools"
3.  click " Delete a file on reboot"
4.  browse to, then double-click on each of the file(s) below, one at a time:

    C:\WINDOWS\system\lsvchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\csmrs.exe

5.  when prompted to " Reboot Now", after selecting each file, select " No"

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.mscdsr] C:\WINDOWS\system\lsvchost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VC5MediaPlayer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\csmrs.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Reboot your computer normally.

Post back a new log, and let me know if that fixes the problem.

Mike.

I ran the Hijack 199.0 and this is the log after the deletions you recomended to and the new  R1 and R2 in the key regester. I went thru first to find the csmrs.exe and Isvhost.exe were not there. I deleted the three 04. I reran the program and both of the R1  were gone, but the second R1  comes back on reboot, and the first come back on dial up.

Boltar,

Since it's looking at this port [9022]:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:9022

Have you checked to see if this port is open on your system. If it is, check to see which program has it open.

Mike.
