Search Engine Hijack

I have virus protection software and a spyware program and use both regularly. My problem is whenever I use the search engine I have as my homepage I get this----
=is.clicktracking&cp=info.dogpl&qcat=web&qkw=cars

and a page that says "cannot find server".  I can use other search engines but not the one I use as my homepage. Why is this so and how do I fix it? Someone says my homepage was hijacked and I need to change "its registry" . What is that and how?

GH,

Download and use an anlysis tool called HiJackThis to generate a log of what's running on your system. Post the results back here and we'll review it for you, and see the extent of the 'infection'.

For instructions on how to do this, see the message pinned at the top of this forum, or just post back.

Usually, 'problem's like aren't alone.

Mike.

GH,

Let's see what we can do...

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following:

Web Related

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32  /u  lbbho.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found.

Now, let's run HiJackThis, then:

1.  click " Config..."
2.  click " Misc Tools"
3.  click " Delete a file on reboot"
4.  browse to, then double-click on each of the file(s) below, one at a time:

     C:\WINNT\System32\xujpigl.exe
      C:\WINNT\lbbho.dll

5.  when prompted to " Reboot Now", after selecting each file, select " No"

In the lower-right hand corner of HiJackThis click " back", then click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: C:\WINNT\lbbho.dll - {B230A2D0-4DC6-4B2A-8A4B-206207531C63} - C:\WINNT\lbbho.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F8B62E68-7D85-907E-32DD-51BA9DA536A1} - C:\WINNT\Rjmnsqze.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: Search - {DD2504EE-5C2A-57B0-50C7-8409F2EF1960} - C:\WINNT\Rjmnsqze.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zlgwnkre] C:\WINNT\System32\xujpigl.exe

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Post back a new log.

Mike.

Midnight Star,

here's what I did so far----

1.  went to add/remove and "Web Related" not listed in programs

2. went to "Run", typed in "ipconfig".  Command Prompt box flashed on and disappeared, tried it twice more and nothing again.

3. Didn't do the rest as suggested 'cause couldn't do step 2.

Did I go to the right place for command prompt, if yes, why did it flash on me and should I continue w/o doing step 2?

GH,

Try to get to a command line this way:

1.  Click "Start | Run..."

2.  Type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press [ENTER].

That should bring up the command line prompt so you can try to unregister the files.

-

What's happening when your executing something using "Run...", like ipconfig, when the output is complete (the program your running finishes), the command prompt gets automatically closed, so you won't be able to see the output.

Mike.

GH,

That's looking better, but we still have a persistant file running and don't know whether it's hostile yet.

Locate this file on your harddrive [  C:\WINNT\System32\xujpigl.exe  ] using "Search...". Then right-click on in and select "properties". Next, click the "version" tab, and post back info on:

  • comment
  • company
  • internal name
  • original file name
  • product

Have HiJackThis fix this entry:

GH,

There's something running on your system that's setting the search page.

The R1 entry I already know about (...dogpile.com...). I'm thinking it's an un-identified virus/ trojan; possibly xujpigl.exe, and was hoping to get more information on that file. If that's a 're-infector' then it'll either reload more 'baddies', or keep resetting your search page.

If you know what that is, let me know, and we should be done.

To go back to your original post, about the home page, try fixing this:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://dogpile.com

Maybe this one is alot simpler than it looked ... :smileyhappy:

Mike,

No "version" tab under properties for "xujpigl.exe". Under program, logo is  MS DOS

for the file to fix under Hijackthis, here's the results:

Mike,

Have no clue what it could be and that in itself is so frustrating. As for the other item to fix; tried  fixing, pulled up dogpile to check and still the same problem.

So you think I may have an unidentified virus\trojan that even Norton nor Spysweeper can detect or remove?

GH,

Yes it is, very frustrating. That's the program that I believe is causing the problem.

Have you tried any of the following yet to see if they can single it out:

1.  www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan".
2.  AdAware SE Personal.
3.  Spybot S&D.

Mike,

Downloaded and scanned w/ trendmicro.com (housecall). Said found and deleted "TROJ_AGENT-1". Problem still exists though. Ran Liveupdate (norton anti-virus) and still could not update definitions.

In Norton Firewall found this in the log viewer, is the "user" below me or this virus you were trying to help me eradicate?

Details:

The user has created a rule to "block" communications
Outbound UDP packet
Local address,service is (192.247.136.129,0)
Remote address,service is (192.168.0.1,domain(53))
Process name is "C:\WINNT\System32\xujpigl.exe"

Don't give up on me yet,

GH
