Strange search engine site taking over my computer!

Hello... I do not even know what security concern to post this under, since it is not a pop-up and I don't know what spyware is. There is a fake MSN search engine (with a lethargic, cheap butterfly icon) that appears in the search engine sidebar to my start-up page when I first get on-line and soon, of its own free will, launches into a full-page screen that blocks out everything else, including my scrollbar. It will not let me close out of it. The only thing I can do is click on one of the search options. When I do a control-alt-delete to end the task, no separate search engine appears in the listing... only my start-up page.

Is this a parasite type site? How do I get rid of it. It is extremely frustrating and I'm sure it is making my computer vulnerable to other hits as well.

I have Norton Antivirus. Since getting and removing the sasser worm, I have downloaded all Windows and Norton updates and enabled my browser's firewall. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for any and all help.

Re: Strange search engine site taking over my computer!

Use these to remove Malware (Virus, Spyware and Adware).

First :-
Spybot S&D and Ad-aware using the settings and links provided

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
HijackThis From Here
or one of these other links:-

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. (See this link for graphical instructions)
Then run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste as a reply to this post and an expert with HijackThis Knowldge, will have a go at giving advice. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste
Please note the list of experts names below, very few forum regulars here have had this training.
