Updates 2/16/16 - PaleMoon, Sandboxie

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=11213&p=78748#p78748

Pale Moon 26.1.0 has been released, which is an update we've been working on to solve the vast majority of issues popping up after the first milestone releases.

We would appreciate it, if you've reported an issue with v26.0 on the forum before, that you actually re-visit your topic and let us know if you are still experiencing issues with the new update, but especially also if this has solved your issue so we can close the relevant topics as solved.

Release notes http://www.palemoon.org/releasenotes.shtml

Changes/fixes:

  • Disabled our ES6 Promise implementation introduced in 26.0 since there were some severe issues with its implementation that caused a lot of inexplicable failures on websites. This means that some sites that insist on using Promises without checking availability and that do not provide sufficient web client compatibility by way of server-side libraries or polyfills will currently not work as-intended. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause; providing a perfectly-working implementation will be our top priority going forward.
  • Improved website compatibility with many sites and web applications by making our cookie gate less strict.
Webmasters please note: it is strongly recommended you follow RFC6265 section 4.1.1 for cookie values, and encode arbitrary cookie content (e.g. JSON data) with a compatible encoding like base64.
  • Fixed web compatibility with Google Hangouts and Yahoo Calendar.
  • Changed the memory allocator on Windows platforms to a much more modern full-library implementation of jemalloc, with miscellaneous additional fixes. This should give comparable speed to the system allocator used in 26.0 and will allocate free memory more dynamically. This should fix issues like "huge animated gif choking" and inexplicable pauses when using many tabs, scrolling (extremely) long pages, or viewing media.
  • Fixed a few rare crashing issues on Windows due to the build process.
  • Reduced so-called "jank" on inner frame scrolling reflows.
  • Extension compatibility: partial implementation of Firefox 26 download js modules as shims; this should make more Firefox extensions that handle downloads in some way or another compatible with us out-of-the-box. (Thanks, Chaoskagami!)
  • Added a "superstop" key combination (Shift+Esc) that will stop all (foreground and background) network activity, stop animated gifs, etc. even after the page itself has fully loaded (and the stop button not being available) - some web applications may not like this if you use it since it will also cancel AJAX/XHR requests, etc.
  • Updated NTLM authentication, deprecating v1 and adding a proper v2 implementation (Thanks, Trava90!)
  • Updated the default theme to tweak/improve it some more (Thanks, Antonius32!)

Security fixes:

  • Updated the Graphite2 font library to 1.3.5+ to fix a number of vulnerabilities (and some font bugs).

Sandboxie 5.08

Released on 16 February 2016.  http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?VersionChanges#v_5.08

  • Improvements to application startup. Applications start faster and Windows 10 race conditions have been fixed.
  • A problem with splwow64.exe in Win 8.1+ 64 bit has been fixed. If a user printed from inside the sandbox using a 32 bit app, printing outside the sandbox would no longer work.
  • Office 2013 in Windows 10 is working under Sandboxie again.
  • F12 Developer Tools now works in IE-11.
  • In rare instances, SandboxieRpcSs.exe or SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe would not end when all other applications had exited.
  • A file named c:\program.exe no longer prevents SandboxieRpcSs.exe from starting.
  • The known conflicts list in templates.ini has been updated.
  • Fixed wrong Windows version # reported for Windows 8.1 (e.g. with http://whatsmyuseragent.com/). Windows 8.1 was reported as Windows 8.0.
  • Windows 10 fast ring build 14251 "IsHungAppWindow" hook issue.
  • Fixed rare Chrome 64 error SBIE2303 Could not hook VerifyCatalogFile (888).

======================================================

Remarks:

1)  I'm assuming there's still a FREE version available.

2) For what it's worth (for better or worse), I'm still running version 4.08 (or 4.09), the last version from Ronen Tzur (aka "Tzuk"), before Sandboxie was completely recoded using Visual Studio 2010.   See http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3522/t/19580964

Caveat: I've started seeing some warning/error messages, as some of the older features are apparently no longer supported.

Joe,

Just out of curiosity, what version of Sandboxie [if any] are you using?   And if the 5.x series, any thoughts on how it compares to 4.x?

Some (of many) Sandboxie known conflicts, as noted here:
www.sandboxie.com/index.php

Problem: Plugins that use NPAPI, including Silverlight, Java, and Unity, won’t work

Problem: Running iTunes for Windows "as sandboxed" OR installing iTunes within a sandbox

Using 5.08 version of Sandboxie.  It seems to perform as well as the 4.x version.
