Virus seemed to overide TrendMicro, it said something about WAVE, looks like there are no program files at all, but they appear to be there, I just can't get to them

I have a Dell Latititude D630 with Windows XP and Trend Micro security.

Two days ago, a virus, sorry I didn't write it down I am new at trying to do this, tried three times to get past TrendMicro. Then a Windows XP warning came up saying their was a critical problem with a hard drive and showed a log. As I have never seen a warning from Windows XP before, I plugged in an external hard drive and opened it, but didn't click on anything as I thought I should try to back up my favorites file (could I have infected it too?). Then I thought that the Windows XP warning might be the actual virus and closed the machine down (a mistake, I am sure). When I rebooted, there were no program files shown at start up. I thought the computer files had been wiped clean. TrendMicro which seemed to have been disabled during the attack, came back on and could find nothing. I left the computer on and yesterday afternoon a ballon came up saying I was running low on disk space, which I am. I clicked on the balloon and sure enough the files and programs appear to be there, but I can't get at them. I unplugged the computer last night during a thunderstorm and after I plugged it back in, I came back to find that Windows had done an update. Thank you in advance, I very much appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

Re: Virus seemed to overide TrendMicro, it said something about WAVE, looks like there are no program files at all, but they appear to be there, I just can't get to them

Hi LauraNY,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any issues you may have. Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.
If you do not reply within 72 hours the thread will be closed, if you need more time let me know. Likewise if I do not respond within 48 hours feel free to PM me.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE

** If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer. The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE

Please proceed as follows :-

Do not run any type of temp file cleaner such as CCleaner, Easy clean etc etc, if you have tell me. Continue as follows please :-

Step 1

Please download Rkill and save to your Desktop.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If you get an alert from the rogue that RKill is a threat, leave that alert open and re-run RKill again.

Step 2

user posted image Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 3

This infection family will also hide all the files on your computer from being seen. To make your files visible again, please download the following program to your desktop:

Unhide tool

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.
Please be patient as this may take several minutes to run, it will scan and fix all Hard drives on your system. You will see a new window with the drive being processed, typically C:\ as below:

user posted image

Changing as the next drive is processed as below:

user posted image

You should get a success alert at the end.

Let me see log from Malwarebytes, also give update on current issues,

Kevin

Kevin80,

Thank you for all your efforts on my behalf and for your very clear instructions. The problem appears to be solved. Should I run the same protocol on the external harddrive I plugged in as the virus was attacking or do you think it is unharmed?

Re: Virus seemed to overide TrendMicro, it said something about WAVE, looks like there are no program files at all, but they appear to be there, I just can't get to them

Hiya Laura,

The external drive should be OK, you can scan it with your own security later if you want when we are finished.

Run the following please :-

Step 1

Run ESET Online Scan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the user posted image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

  • Click on user posted image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the user posted image icon on your desktop.

  • Check user posted image
  • Click the user posted image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check user posted image
  • Leave the tick out of remove found threats
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push user posted image
  • Push user posted image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the user posted image button.
  • Push user posted image

You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.
Frequently asked questions available Here Please read them before running the scan.

Also be aware this scan can take between one and several hours to complete depending on the size of your system.

ESET log can be found here "C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt".

Step 2

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe (Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select "Run as Administrator") and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me see the logs from ESET and Security Checks, also tell me if all of the missing programs/files etc have returned....

Kevin
