chkdsk scans associated with a virus?

Every time I turn on my laptop inspiron 1520, it runs a 2-3 hour long chkdsk scan.  This has happened four times in a row.   I've never had a single problem with my laptop until now. 

What is causing my computer to run this over and over?   I've been told it's a virus.  I've been told my harddrive is preparing to crash (my laptop is only a year old).   I've been told it's a good thing.  I'm barely over my warranty to tech support is of no help.   What do I do?  And if this is the wrong place to post this, please point me in the right direction.  Thanks!
