{moved} Speaker problems on clean install, XPS 410 - Possible Spware/Malware*

I recently did a clean install on my XPS 410 because of blue screen issues when setting up wireless network in my home.  All seemed to go well - is something I have done numerous times on several computers, this one included.  But this time my speaker system (Dell A525 30 Watt 2.1 Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer) obviously caused a problem.  I have the drivers to all my devices on my external hard drive and they are labeled.  The driver to the speaker system loaded but still showed yellow in device manager.  I also kept getting the following message directly after windows loaded:  "The procedure entry point LocalizeString could not be located in the dynamic link library STLang.dll."  I could click OK and proceed. Slowly.  I looked it up on the net and find it is quite common - everybody seems to have a way to cure it but there are always strings attached and none of them work anyway!  One thing all agreed was it pertained to the sound equipment.  And it was the only yellow marked item I had.  Actually it showed in device manager as: "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC".

I became exasperated to the point I disconnected that sound system and removed it from the room!  I attached an older Dell speaker system and it only worked for a few sounds then stopped.  Eventually I removed the original system, as listed just above, using add/remove programs.  After that the message went away so I am sure it was the problem.  Then, when I couldn't get the other speakers to work I decided to restore to the point immediately before I removed that "SigmaTel" system.  Wrong!  Of course it came back as did the error message and I was unable to get those old speakers installed no matter how hard I tried!  (I don't have the driver for that specifically but the system kept coming up with something that didn't work).  So once again I attempted to uninstall the SigmaTel program but it wouldn't let me!!  Would take me to a website that was of no use to me.

As it stands now, I have reversed that system restore point and the SigmaTel is gone as is the error message.  But I have no working sound system on my 410.

Any ideas out there?  I have been a member of this community almost since day one and have had excellent results in the past.  I'll bet somebody knows how to help me.  (Anybody remember Denny Denham?  I do but know he isn't out there to help anymore. Always wondered what happened to him.)

Thanks in advance.  Bessie

It's up to you, but the analysts at sites like SpywareInfoForums, SpywareHammer, Bleeping Computer, Geeks To Go, TechSupport Forums, and MalwareRemoval Forums, unlike some OEM tech support help and other forums, are trained to stay with you to resolution and remove their tools (assuming the poster returns for the followup) so that they are not left on the system to get you "into trouble". They will probably have you run one or two scans that will (hopefully) pinpoint where that registry entry is. After that they will give you a registry file that you can download and double-click to merge with your registry. That should fix the problem. We used to do that one-on-one free support here, but Dell discontinued that about a year ago.

I wish you luck on whatever route you choose to take.

Bugbatter

Hi Bessie,

Welcome back!

Your speakers are external devices, so they need no driver. The driver you need is for your audio adapter. I think this is the correct one.

Yes, I remember Denny quite well. We miss him around here. Not sure if I have any links to his old sites but he kept some good information handy.

Thanks, Osprey.  I brought my subwoofer set back into the room, plugged them in and downloaded the driver you directed me to.  It worked in that I now have sound coming from my speakers and there are no yellow items in my device manager BUT that stupid error message came back during startup!  Exact same one.  I will either have to just put up with it or do another clean install to see if it works better next time.  Really a hassel though since my windows disk has SP 2 and just getting windows update to work is difficult - saved my notes so maybe it will be easier the second time around.  I also ordered and received yesterday an SP 3 CD from Mirosoft.  Probably will try to load that directly after clean install; maybe it will help.  I'll think on it.

I would say this answered my question but since that error message is still there - well I better wait on that one.

I did save a few links to Denny's sites -  just checked them out and they don't look like they used to.  Might still be useful sometime though.

Install CCleaner, run the registry cleaner (back up the registry when prompted) to remove the startup entry.

As I look back I find Philip Yip and natakuc4 seem to be one and the same person - so maybe the joke IS on me or something like that.  Please clarify.

Thanks,

Bessie

Bessie here.  I just got through a wild ride trying to download the CCleaner, free version.  Got everything but CCleaner!  I guess if I had paid the $30. or $40. for the "better and best" versions I might have gotten a different experience OR would I just have lost my money and gotten the wild ride to boot?

If you are a genuinely nice guy, Philip Yip, I do appreciate your trying to help.  But, however, if you knew all the time I would get into all this mess - well Dell should ban you from the community.  I do hope you meant well.  Did you?  I like to think so but do wonder.  Is the joke on me?  Please let me know, Philip Yip. I think you owe me - and everybody else reading this - a truthful explaination.

Bessie        And I will be waiting - - - - - -

Philip Yip and natakuc4 seem to be one and the same person

natakuc4 is my forum name, Philip Yip is my actual name. You can see that by my signature on all my posts. I am sorry if there is a mix up with respect to downloading CCleaner. It should of been relatively hassle free to get.

Got everything but CCleaner!

What did you get, did the websites you go to look exactly like this below? If you have installed other programs or been directed to another site then can you tell us what everything else was? Did you install any other programs that weren't CCleaner or get prompted to?

CCleaner is free, you shouldn't of needed to pay for it, you can get premium support for it but it isn't necessary. I have never got it and I don't know what their premium support is like.

The website (CCleaner) I told you to go to should look exactly like this:

Click download from Piriform.com

Click the save as or run at the bottom of internet explorer.

The other link the FileHippo one should also be fine and should look like this instead. (It is however running very slowly for me).

The CCleaner Program should look like this:

You can click analyse and it will tell you what files can be cleaned up

Then click the run cleaner to clean up the files.

The registry cleaner part is here:

Click scan for issues. The issue you have will likely be a missing startup item or shared dll or a combination of the above.

You will be prompteed to back your registry up, click yes and save the file on the C Drive. This is only incase something goes wrong which has never happened to me with CCleaner. Having the backup will allow you to restore the registry.

Usually I just click fix all selected but you can go through them all individually if you like.

Did you get the CCleaner, or did you go to another website and install another program?

The first screen you show was like what I saw except I see you are using different currency; not a big deal.  Where I obviously went wrong was to click on the first download option, File Hippo.com.  If you want a 'ride'  just click on that one!  I got all sorts of stuff and I was careful to look for places to unclick add-on options - but I really don';t remember any of those!  I got SPEEDIT UP, FAST SEARCH BY SURF CANYON, YONTOO LAYERS, NET ASSISTANT BUNDLE, DEFAULT TAB, SHOP TO WIN, YAHOO TOOLBAR, ARO 2012, FREE RIDE GAMES, J. DOWNLOADER, THE SEA APP, and the most exasperating - 7 ZIP  and 7 ZIP INSTALL!  Never once did I get an option to download CCleaner!  The 7 ZIP INSTALL wouldn't even finish loading - I waited a good 30 minutes after it was nearly there but it never got there!  Some of what I have named were just shortcuts on my desktop; most were actual programs that showed up in my Add-Remove programs and many were very hard to remove.  They also showed up in my Taskbar.  Somehow BABYLON came back, too.  I had gotten that earlier and had a real hard time getting rid of it - it is still showing as my spare default search engine!  I change it to Bing but next time it shows up again.  7 ZIP Install showed up twice in Add Remove programs and really didn't want to leave.  And I nearly forgot, Dr. Watson showed up as well with 8 changes to Net Frame 1 and 2!  I have no idea what that will do to Windows - so far I have left that part alone.  And I forgot to mention, Yahoo became my homepage; whan I got rid of that Babylon took over!

I was afraid not to write all of this stuff down because I knew I didn't want it.  I still have to check my C drive and see what fragments are left over.  Or I just might do another clean install.  Or maybe I should try again to get CCleaner using the Pinifom.com site.  At this point, since I have loaded very few programs since my clean install, doing another might be my best option so I can be sure to get rid of all the mess I have been left with.  It is a good thing I have another computer or I would be tearing my hair out about now!

I do appreciate your response.  But next time you recommend CCleaner please be sure to tell the person to use Pinifom.com instead of the one I used!

I have now successfully downloaded, installed, and used CCleaner.  My error message remains.  I will do another clean install one of these days.

Hi Bessie,

I see that your topic has been transferred to the Virus & Spyware Forum. On this forum we usually recommend the Slim Build of CCleaner, and advise folks not to use the registry cleaning component. Super Anti-Spyware is recommended for cleaning cookies and temps, but it does not seem to do the job of a "big gun".

I agree that you probably need a clean OS install, but if you want to try a quick fix first, give this a try for that Babylon Toolbar.

Download the adwCleaner

    • Run the Tool
  • Select the Delete button.
  • When the scan completes, it will open a notepad windows.
  • Please, copy the content of this file in your next reply.
  • Based on your results, someone will advise the next steps.

Piriform and FileHippo have been both fine for me, I have used the download links from both sites and recommended them to other people without any problems for years. I tested them both out just there.

It sounds like you got a load of rubbish installed and possibly that something was redirecting your browser. I would guess that you had some Malware/Viruses. What security programs are you using?

Note when installing any software even if its from a trusted source such as Dell and Microsoft, select the advanced install and uncheck any boxes asking you to install toolbars or change your browser/homepage. A great deal of software do this now. Even software from some large companies e.g. HP Printer software has a huge amount of junk.

I personally would say the computer was compromised and perform a clean install with a full format with DBAN. My guides A Clean Install of Windows will help with this. I will move this thread to the virus/spyware forum.

I wrote the last item above before I read your reply.  I use Mc Afee Security Center provided my my cable provider and run scans using SuperAnti Spyware often.  I will scan your site about clean installs to see if it will help.  But, as I said most recently, it will have to be another day.  Just too tired to deal with it now especially since I have a 2 month old computer in another room that I use most often.  This computer is being used as a spare because it is not only a good computer but has windows xp.

Thanks for the info. I would have preferred that you had saved the tool to your desktop rather than running it while online. However, are you seeing any changes in performance? Babylon should be  gone. Are you still having audio problems?
