"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" also Possible NEWDOT problems

SYSTEM:

Microsoft Windows XP

Home Edition

Version 2002

Service Pack 3

Dell Dimension DIM 4500

I keep getting the error message IE HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO SHUT DOWN

RUNDLL

Also I believe I am having a problem with Newdot. I tried to download AVG but due to being on slow dialup it said 17 hrs download. I left it on and went to bed. When I got up this morning there is a file on my desktop for AVG but it will not open.

Downloaded Microsoft Defender but it won't update, gives code 0x8024400e.

Computer running very slow, and hangs up.; Last night I ran CCleaner and Malwarebytes' Anti Malware but thought I better quit and ask for help.

Hi and Welcome,
You may be looking at a reformat/reinstall of Windows if your computer is so slow that it cannot download our tools, but we'll see what we can do first. I suggest that you start backing up important files, just in case you need to reformat.

Please post your log from MBAM showing what it cleaned.

In addition, we need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.
  • Click Yes at the prompt for Optional Scan.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
  • 1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Copy/paste both logs to your reply on the forum.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
  • Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

Your MBAM is very outdated. Please open it, go to the Update tab and UPDATE it. Run another scan and please post that log. IF MBAM is so outdated that it will not update, you may have to uninstall it, and download the current version. **If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

Here are the download instructions again in case you need them:

Please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, Photobucket
    Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Notes)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process; if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

If you encounter this message:
"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5"
Click on ignore mbamext.dll

* If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use the update link mentioned above to manually update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "glenda.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the file to the infected computer. Install the "glenda.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.

MBAM's latest database is 2066. Yours is 1945. Perhaps some malware is preventing updating.

I'd like to run an online scan, however if you are on dialup, that won't be easy.

Let's try this instead:

Please download DrWeb-CureIt  & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:

  • Double-click on cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • If not given a choice select "custom scan".
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
  • ( This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Also please post a HijackThis log in your next reply. Instructions are at the top of the forum here: Please Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

I ran scan with DrWeb-Curelt and saved the log, however it saved as Excel file. I have copied and pasted the file here:

Please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove AVG Anti-Spyware. Reboot.

Following that, please run CCleaner. I see that you already have the programs. ** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner. ** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.

1. Before beginning the scan, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:

  • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
  • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section
  • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
  • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
  • Clean any others that you choose. In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
  • Clean any others that you choose.

3. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.

5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.

6. Click "exit" when done.

REBOOT.

Download -- to your Desktop -- JavaRa.Zip from either of these two sites:
http://prm753.bchea.org/click/click.php?id=9
http://www.majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

  • Unzip the download. This will create a new Folder, JavaRa on your Desktop.
  • Double click this new Folder to open it, and double click the file within: JavaRa to execute the program.
  • Click the button: Remove Older Versions.
  • Agree to the cleanup operation by clicking Yes. After a moment, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK. Close the Notepad view that opens.
  • Click the button: Other Tasks.
  • Choose these options:
  • Remove Useless JRE Files
    Remove Startup Entry
    Remove JavaRa Logfile
  • Click Go. When it finishes, click OK to close the panel, and then Exit the program.
  • Delete the download, and the unzipped folder and all contents.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Select Windows Offline Installation > SAVE it to your desktop, do not RUN it yet.
  • When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update. Be patient: It may take five (5) minutes or more for the installation to complete.
  • If the installation gives you the option to install a toolbar UNCHECK the option if you don't want it .

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Open MBAM. Go to the Update tab. Click on "Check for Updates". When finished updating, please perform a Full scan and post the new log.

Let me know how things are running. If everything is back to normal, we'll flush System Restore.

When I opened JRE 6 upadate 13 to install a window came up wanting to know where I wanted to download the file. You had not mentioned this window so I downloaded it to the desktop. Will I need to move it? If so to where?

I updated MBAM and updated then ran scanned: The log follows:

Upon finishing the repairs you are helping me with, I have a few other questions to ask if you do not mind.

1. Task Manager: what is normal amount of processes running? At this time there are 40

EXAMPLE: There is a process running called alg.exe which I looked up and it says

Filename: alg.exe

Virus Name: TR/Dldr.CWS.S.48

Type: Trojan

Risk: Medium

Description: Is a Trojan for the Windows platform, has the functionality to silently download, install and run new software.

%WINDIR%\inet20001\alg.exe

Recommendation: Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs"

You can remove this file using Easy SpyRemover

2. Why does it take so long to reboot?  What is actually running and what is needed during startup?

3. In the taskbar at the bottom everytine I reboot Yahoo Messenger and Kodak come back up although every time I close them out.

4. The last few days a floating window for Kodak appears and there is no where to close it. I have never seen it before.

5. Since you have been working with me I have some things on the desktop that I am unsure if I should move to the trash.

DD.txt, launch.exe & DrWeb.csv

6. A while back my cd rom apparently went out. What exactly do I ask for when ordering one? I want to purchase a new copy of Norton but I can not install it until I fix the cd rom problem.

I AM TRYING TO GET MY COMPUTER BACK TO A GOOD STATE AND TRYING TO MAKE IT RUN FASTER ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME IS SO APPRECIATED!

If your computer is several years old, it may be time to reinstall the operating system.

You should have saved the Java to your to your desktop.
When you run the setup, it should have installed to your Programs.

I'm glad that you can now update MBAM. I suggest keeping that and checking for updates daily.

You can delete: DDS.txt, launch.exe & DrWeb.csv

I cannot help you with hardware issues such as your CD drive on this forum. You would need to call Dell to order or order online. If you want to try to repair it first, try posting HERE

You do have Kodak software running and that includes the updater. Could that window be the updater reminding you of something?
You can take Yahoo Messenger, Kodak and other unnecessary programs out of startup by using a program like StartInspector 2.2  or WinPatrol . These programs will give you information on what is needed at Startup and will let you disable it from running when you boot the computer.

Unfortunately, you are on dial-up or I'd suggest removing Norton completely, running the Norton removal tool, and downloading one of the free anti-virus programs.
I like Avast  Maybe you could check into it and see how long it would take to download. I use Avast and like it very much.

Easy SpyRemover was at one time considered a rogue program because of false positives.. I'd stay away from that if I were you. My security will not let me visit the webpage for the vendor.
alg.exe is a core process for Microsoft Windows Internet Connection sharing and Internet connection firewall. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Please open HijackThis. Click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Select a place to save it. The list should open in notepad.
Copy and paste that list here.

It looks as if Java did not install in your Program Files. Try that again. Restore the jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe installation file from your Recycle Bin to the Desktop where you deleted it from earlier.
On your desktop, double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java. It should by default install to your Program Files. Make sure that is where it is going.
After it installs, you can delete all the Java files on your Desktop.
Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log.
