something is not quite right...

I can't put my finger on it but something is just not right on my system.  I got some kind of "anti" virus pop up last night - and I accidentally bumped the enter key at the same time as it asked me if I wanted to download the software so it got an OK...  I pulled the switch on the wifi and killed the connection.  Boy do I love that switch.   I rebooted - deleted the pages from my history and started AVG scan which found nothing.

But since then, say when I open My Documents - it blinks and I am no longer "in" the window until I click it again...  So before it becomes something big, I would really appreciate it if someone here could review the Hijackthis log just to be sure.  I checked my start up items in msconfig and there is nothing new there that is checked and running.

bamajum helped me with the previous laptop and it's little issue last spring, so I have great confidence and appreciation for this form.

I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:

If you are going to be working with me, please do  NOT do that.

 

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. Definition of cracked software HERE.

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.  The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a list HERE.    

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

Have you posted this in the virus malware forum? I would love to help you and think I could but by forums rules users not certified by the virus malware forum are forbiden to help you.

I can tell you that yes what you got was a trojan virus that spoofs itself to be an intivirus program.

From the damage you note I doubt the gurus in the virus malware forum will be able to fix your pc with out a total reinstall at this point.

One general tip...run all your anti virus malware software in safemode with system restore off.

Have you tried to restore windows to a previous point?

I just went throught this same issue. I panicked, but got help from a friend. Google Malware bytes and download the software. It will get rid of the trojan that is causing this problem and your computer will once again function correctly.

While I come here for help and would of course comply with anything you would have told me to do I have a question about the requests you made.  I posted to the person who recommended malwarebytes that I am trying it first as it appears (and I know that can be a fake appearance) to have removed the things I knew to be there when I ran it in safemode.  I'm re-running and testing things and if it is still infested, I might just wipe it.  It's seems easier as this computer is only 2 months old so I already have a back up of everything up to that point.

My question is:

* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.

uhhmmm   If I don't log on - how would I get further instructions?  I can understand limiting my internet time but not having any would mean I could not get the replies. 

I had a HUGE malware problem on a business trip in April of last year when a pop up happened and I accidentally clicked on it when I thought I was clicking on the window below...  Which is what happened to me the other night.  Both happened when I was sleepy...  When I was on the trip in April, I had left without my back up disks which I will never do again. 

So if this isn't fixed, I am probably going to wipe the hard drive.  Wed is my off afternoon and I can do it with few interruptions.

broken rule or not, I reviewed Malwarebytes and decided to try it.  So I downloaded and installed it.  rebooted in safemode and it appears to have done the trick.  I will monitor for a couple days and see how things go.  I'm re-running it and AVG right now as a double check.   It appears to be a fantastic piece of software.  So even though you didn't know you were breaking the rules, you did help me.  I thought this was the right forum to ask the question I asked, I'm glad you mentioned it.

I will post a new hijack this log if I have more problems in the right place.

Pamy, I'm not sure whom you were addressing your questions to, but the helpers in this thread have not replied, so I will respond.

1. Malware needs to be removed in a sequence of steps depending on the configuration of each system and on the variant of malware. Someone familiar with the malware's components, changes that it makes to the system, and trained in the use of specific tools should be guiding you in steps for the cleanup. A helper who has contact with the developers if anything goes wrong should be supervising. Not all tools are compatible with all operating systems. Not only does the infection have to be cured, but any vulnerabilities need to be addressed. Otherwise, the problem will be repeated.
Think of it this way: You are doing brain surgery on your computer. Would you want half a dozen helpers with different skill levels in the operating room while you were having brain surgery? Each would be giving a different opinion even though some of them never went to medical school. Or would you want a specialist with experience and training?  Would you want a doctor who didn't just walk out of the room if something went wrong, or would you want someone who could handle complications?
It's the same thing here.



2. As far as this, "If I don't log on - how would I get further instructions?" For those systems that are extremely infected, the owners need to use a clean computer online in order to transfer instructions, tools, and procedures to the infected computer. In those cases it would not be wise to put such an infected computer back online right away as soon as the user thinks it's okay -- until it has been confirmed.   In other words, we have people who can get online at a certain point, but after they receive instructions here they may decide to check online mail and go to a few favorite web pages. That is a  NO-NO because while the user is online, there may be vulnerabilities that have not been fixed yet, thus enabling malware to re-infect the system. Check instructions here, print them, and unless you need to be online to run an online scan or special fix, it is advisable go offline except to post the results back here and read new instructions. That is why you will see that our instructions for some of the more powerful tools dealing with very serious infections often include, "Go offline. Pull the plug!"

 


3.  Kudiddle"Feel free to comment on my advice either way."  We appreciate your trying to help, however this is not a training forum. I will not do that in a public forum. We can always use more helpers. If you would like to register for training, there is a list of schools in the "Please Read This..." announcement at the top of this forum. If time does not permit you to do that, feel free to offer general suggestions on the Virus and Spyware Discussions Forum. That forum is for general advice. This forum does "brain surgery" based on analysis of diagnostic logs.  For the safety of the original poster working with one specialist from beginning to end is preferable.

Well everyone doesn't have another computer to access.

This ended well though.  I ran AVG in safemode with system restore off and it appears to be clean and isn't doing any of the odd things it was doing.

I am now telling all about Malwarebytes though.  I also installed Spybot Search and Destroy.  After inunizing the system, it has a utility in the tray that monitors programs behavior. 

So far, so good.
