Vostro 3670, E2318H driver vs Windows 10 generic PnP driver

Hello, I have a new Vostro 3670 with Windows 10 Pro installed by Dell. It is at OS version 1809 (OS build 17763.316), and a Dell 23 Monitor E2318H. I'm using the VGA ports on both. The monitor driver is the Microsoft generic PnP driver. I see there is a Dell driver for  the E2318H at https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=kk2ty&oscode=wt64a&productcode=dell-e2318h-monitor.

Would it be better if I installed the Dell driver? Any down side to doing this?

Thanks,

Tim

I have a new Dell 27" "gaming" monitor.  I'm using the generic PNP drivers and everything works OK including the high 2560X1440 resolution.  But I have to use HDMI2 or Display port on my PC (that I have) to get that resolution.

With VGA I doubt that you can get HD resolution.

a. With VGA, there is no PnP so it can't detect or need to use better driver.

b. With that (new) PC and monitor, you should not be using (analog) VGA. Even low resolutions you can reach are fuzzy compared to using a (newer) digital input .

I suggest DisplayPort if possible (DVI if DP not possible).

E2318H

  • Manufacturer part XG7KG
  • Dell part 210-AMBM
  • The Dell E2313H monitor offers DVI/VGA connectivity

Not getting more than a specific resolution is due to not having windows 10 VIDEO DRIVERS for your Graphics card. You are using the Microsoft VGA Driver.

Min VGA is 640 x 480

Later 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 were used.

MaxResolution,,"1920,1080" applies to your monitor

Thanks for your replies. Getting the max resolution is not an issue. I did switch to the Dell driver for the E2318H monitor and still can use the max resolution of 1920x1080 with VGA. The problem I was really trying to resolve is that occasionally resizes all open windows to the same size and piles them over each other in the upper left of the screen. It's a pain to have to move them back and resize them. I think this happens if the monitor goes to power saving mode too quickly, and confuses the OS or drivers. I've read of others seeing this with various combinations of computers and monitors.

The Vostro 3670 only has VGA and HDMI, and the monitor has only VGA and DisplayPort. This is why I'm using VGA. From what I've read, computer HDMI to monitor DisplayPort requires an adapter/converter, and they seem rather pricey.

I did switch from the generic PnP driver to the Dell E2318H driver and this issue persists. For a full description of my issue see https://www.dell.com/community/Vostro-Desktops/Vostro-3670-lock-unlock-open-minimized-windows-move/m-p/7247430/highlight/false#M2079
