Vostro 3900, Windows 7 to 10?

I need to upgrade my Vostro 3900 to windows 10 pro. What steps do I need to take? Also , support assistant says that there is an urgent BIOS update for my system (A15). Do I need to do this update before the Win 10 pro upgrade or can it be done later after I see that the OS upgrade is stable. Trying to get ahead of the win 7 end of service life issue. Any detailed help or suggestions are welcomed

REMOVE Any Antivirus software.

Install any Bios updates under windows 7.

Do a clean install for 10 using WINDOWS 10 1809 system builder DVD.

Thank you Speedstep for your prompt reply. I will need to download the bios update and get a copy WINDOWS 10 1809 system builder DVD.

I will pray that the BIOS update goes great and I do not brick my system. Once again thanks.

After the Win 10 upgrade, I hope my QB pro 2019, Quicken Deluxe 2019, Office 365, Gforce Experience for my GTX 745 card, Google Earth Pro and Chrome browser all work and are stable

One question, I have been reading up on win 10 and one of the major complaints is its bloat of adware that you ca't turn off. To your knowledge , is this true?

There will be no less than 25 attempts during install to get you to use a microsoft account.  Bloatware must be manually removed from windows 10.  You do not need MCAFEE or NORTON and I do not EVER recommend those.  Windows Defender is built into 8 and 10.

Office 365 will tie in all the privacy robbing features of windows 10.

I recommend using Oracle Open Office instead.

https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

Getting windows 10 to be stable and not spy on your every move is not a sound byte single click done in 20 seconds.

Easiest way around a lot of the nonsense is to make a local Account.

Make sure you are not online.  If wireless networks show up and they want you to connect click SKIP THIS STEP.

They will then say do you want to connect later the answer is still NO.

Never Make a Microsoft Account and Never Use the windows app store.

YOU DO NOT Have to give ANY real information on that account aka it does not have to be your real name.

I use Ann  Onymous.

There will be questions about location services and many other things.

You say NO NO NO NO NO NO.

It will then want to enable CORTANA to listen to your voice,  log every keystroke,  log everything printed.

This is also NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

One Drive will start when computer starts.  You will have to manually turn that off.

There will be "suggestions" on the start menu and every tile will be a live tile.

You will have to manually turn off all the LIVE tiles.

Once privacy and location and everything else is set to NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO you can launch internet explorer to download FIREFOX ESR.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

Firefox will have an "account and sync" feature offered.  You skip that also.

Chrome is the same wanting an advertising account and email address.

You do not have to give them anything.

I don't do outlook.com nor do I do the "MAIL" application from the start menu.  I use firefox and login via web browser.

The browser is set to not save passwords and locations and deletes cache on exit.

I've upgraded approximately 50 machines the last month. Couple of small goofy issues that were easily fixed. As speedstep suggested, uninstall or disable any antivirus and malware programs. Uninstall everything you don't need. Do a good cleanup/maintenance. Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk and make sure your win7 system is clean. I like to defrag before the upgrade also.

You can download win 10 here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 I usually create the iso then extract it with 7-zip or similar and run setup.

I like O&O Shutup for a quick interface to disabling a bunch of garbage https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
