Love crazy stuff - customer installs ScaleIO on all-flash QNAP

A great function of EMC providing ScaleIO free and frictionless is that people use it and try it in so many ways that we had never imagined.

One of our awesome customers in Estonia wanted to test out ScaleIO to replace some legacy storage.

They worked with or awesome partner Datafox and my likewise awesome EMC colleague Aleksandr Shvadtshenko.

What they did was awesome, they had three QNAPs with OpenSuse on them, then went out and filled them with cheap SSD's from the local electronics dealer.

Since the QNAP's run OpenSuse, ScaleIO installs without any modification!

So, a bunch of SSD's, cheap 10GbE backend.

No tuning of QNAP, ScaleIO or network, no strangeness, they reached over 1GByte/s throughput!

With the small blocks they pushed over 180k IOPS!

Pure raw small random read/write.

Testing rebuild showed 1.2GB/s speed.

Need I say they were very impressed and went out and bought a good chunk of licenses and support and are now gearing up to put ScaleIO in production very soon.
