After upgrading to Windows 10, Skype microphone volume is too low

Hi,

if you think this is a Skype issue, think again. Here are the steps to reproduce this problem:

1. Upgrade your Dell Inspiron laptop to Windows 10,

2. Start using Skype

3. Hear complaints from others that they can't hear you.

4. Use Skype test call and notice you barely hear yourself.

5. Reinstalling Realtek drivers, downgrading Skype etc won't help.

If you think this is Skype issue please provide me an answer, why do only Dell users having this issues?

Here are links from Skype forums where several different people complained about this error:

I have been having the same issue on a Dell xps 15.  Driving me crazy with a variety of solutions, but the trouble was that anything that fixed my mic levels would ruin my sound quality on anything I was listening to.  Until they fix it, the easiest solution is just to use the skype online beta, which for some reason plays perfect mic levels.

Hope that helps

Hi,

Indeed Mic level is correct in Skype Web.In case you still need to use Skype desktop, JUST INSTALL Skype version 7.0.0.102

It works fine, just tested it and confirmed!! download the version suggested from :

Best,

Hello there,

problem with Realtek Driver for Win10. I have temporary fix for this problem.

  1. Open "Device Manager".
  2. Next find "Sound, video and game controllers".
  3. Next find "Realtek High Definition Audio" (or same) and Right Click on it
  4. Choose "Update Driver Software...".
  5. Then "Browse my computer for driver software".
  6. Next "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  7. Choose "High Definition Audio Device"

Thats all. Enjoy ;)

P.S. Windows 10 can automatically update your drivers to latest manufacturer version, if that happens your settings will be dropped. Follow this guide to turn off automatic drivers updates: www.howtogeek.com/.../how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10

Hi InspiredQ,

So, it's just replace the default driver "Realtek High Definition Audio" by a generic "High Definition Audio Device" ? if so, can you please, just in case, write down here the exact version of this generic driver your using now in you laptop?

Thanks.

Thanks! I have a brand new HP laptop with the same issue out of the box. For disabling automatic update back to Realtek, I found this trick - deny SYSTEM access to the Realtek folder.

Same with my Dell XPS 15 after upgrading to Windows 10.

Microphone level fine in Audacity. Test audio file all as would be expected. But with Skype, having checked the microphone settngs, I have to shout at the top of my voice to register the slightest sound.

Right-clicking speaker task bar item, selecting Recording Devices, shows the USB external mike I have plugged in, and the level meter hardly moves, just like the built-in mike. BUT the external mike works fairly well with Skype, while the built-in mike does not.

So I'll just carry on wasting so much if my life on these pathetic computers that the billionairres have got us all addicted to..
