XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

i have tried everything i can to get my xps 8920, i7 7th gen, upgraded to ssd.  i have unplugged all usb, sd card and extra drive.  i have tried the upgrade from iso, usb, cd.  i have renamed inetsrv, tried rebuilding the bcd.  i am about at my wits end.  the ssd has over 900gb avail space.  i enlarged the recovery partition.  any help would be really appreciated.

thank you

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

Why are you trying to update to v1903 when the latest is v1909?

ISO vs USB vs CD...??  You use an ISO to create a USB or DVD, you can't use the ISO by itself.  You need a bootable 16-GB USB stick or a bootable DVD. A CD is too small to hold the Windows update.

Tell us what happens when it "will not update to 1903". Error message or...?

Tell us what you've tried so we don't give instructions that haven't worked, and be sure to mention how you created the USB stick...

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

hi, sorry i wasn't clear.

i used the iso and created a usb, and a dvd, and a file on my desktop.  i have tried to upgrade from all three and get the 0x80070005 error.

i have tried just about everything i have found on the internet to get this to go through.

i have done the sfc scannow, the dism repair, run update troubleshooter multiple times.

i have cleaned out the software folder.

just about out of anything else to try.

thanks for your reply

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

Error Code 0x80070005—also known as 'Access Denied' error—is related to Windows updates. It occurs when the system or user lacks the required files or permissions to change settings at the time of Windows update.

Before going any further, back up your personal files on external media ASAP and make sure you have the product keys for all installed apps (eg, MS Office, etc), to be safe!

Are you running BitLocker or other encryption software?

Scanned thoroughly for malware recently?

Are you logged in on an account that has Administrator privileges?

Have you tried disabling your anti-malware app?

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

How are you running these attempts to update? Are you booting from the USB stick or from the DVD, or trying to do it inside Windows?

Connect the USB stick to the PC before  powered on. Then power on and immediately press F12. Look for the option to boot from USB.

When it boots from the stick, follow the prompts to repair Windows. Be careful at each step because you only want to repair, not reinstall which will erase all your files and all apps that are installed...

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

You're not making this easy... 😣

Have you tried resetting BIOS to factory defaults?

  1. Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy down all current BIOS settings, to be safe
  3. Power off, unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Reinstall battery (Time for fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery? ~$2.00)
  8. Close up and connect mouse, monitor, keyboard and ethernet cable, if you hardwire to router/modem
  9. Reboot
  10. Launch the update on the USB stick from inside Windows using File Explorer to open the USB stick and double-clicking setup.exe

BTW:

  1. Have you tried disabling your anti-malware app?
  2. Do you have a HDD installed in addition to the SSD? You might disconnect that HDD from the motherboard and then clear BIOS etc.

Re: XPS 8920, will not update to 1903

hi again, i am really not trying to be difficult.

i have reset my bios to default.

i changed the system battery, and have done the holding down of the power button.

i have unplugged all usb connections, and disconnected the sd card reader.

i uninstalled my anti-maleware software.

i only have the single ssd connected.

when i click on setup.exe on the usb, after going through the set up process, i get the windows 10 update has failed.

what could be blocking my system from completing the update?

thank you for the help
