Dell System Detect: Common Questions

For more information about the recent issue reported related to Dell System Detect (DSD), refer below.

November 23, 2015

Description: Dell System Detect application and its DSDTestProvider root certificate had similar characteristics to eDellRoot certificate that was installed on Dell PC's. With Dell System Detect (DSD), the customer downloads the software proactively to interact with the Dell Support website so we can provide a better and more personalized support experience. The support certificate in question was designed to make it faster and easier for our customers to get support. The certificate unintentionally introduced a security vulnerability.

The application was removed from the Dell Support site immediately and a replacement application without the certificate is now available. We are proactively pushing a software update to address the issue and have provided instructions to remove this certificate.

Impact: The impact is limited to customers who used the "detect product" functionality on our support site between Oct. 20 and Nov. 24, 2015.

Fix Information:

Additional Information

  • Dell will also push a software update starting November 24, that will check for the certificate, and if detected will remove it.
  • Customers who reimaged their systems without Dell Foundation Services are not affected by this issue.
  • Additionally, the certificate will be removed from all Dell systems moving forward.
