unable to install win 10

Jump to solution

i have tried 4 times to install win 10

3 times from Microsoft updates

Once with the Media download tool

i get this same result every time

It downloads ok (win 10)  then i get the install screen with the big circle and percentage in it

It does the Copying files ok, then computer restarts then installation continues and now it is installing features and drivers, that goes ok, computer restarts again and should finish the 3rd part, which is configuration settings, the dell logo comes up then screen goes black, i waited an hour and it stayed black no curser showing

After the hour i turned it off and on again, it said attempting to recover installation, screen went black ,waited half an hour, nothing.

Turned it off again and after the dell logo it said, restoring previous version of windows

I have tried 4 times

It will not complete the install .

With the Media download tool the message was  " the installation failed in the second_boot phase with an error during boot operation"

My computer is a Inspiron 17(7737)  win 8.1  64 bit, dell says it is up to date

Well this could be the culprit.

Personally, I'm no longer going to attempt upgrading to Win10 until I can upgrade my BIOS.

Just a reminder, best backup your system (and not just your data) and set your boot order to either USB or DVD (whichever your rescue solution is in) before attempting a BIOS flash Gordon.

BIOS updates are the equivalent of radical maxillofacial reconstruction for laptops. We're not talking about popping a zit b4 Wednesday night Wings & Poker at Angels, a lot of things can go wrong when trying to make your interface look like Kim K's 2 moons.

Hello Alrose,

I have the same laptop model and OS. Same thing happened to me but after the 3rd attempt, system reverted back to 8.1 (meaning that Win10 was partially installed).

May I ask what BIOS version you're running? Some posters indicated installing the latest BIOS driver  (7737A13.exe)  solved their Win10 migration issues.

My laptop is running on BIOS version A4 and it's been impossible for me to upgrade to a more recent version. BIOS FLASH keeps failing from both Windows and DOS environment.

It's a bummer ...

well at least, my laptop is still working. Read a post from a user who bricked his 7737 after a failed BIOS flash  ...  emoticon.Confused.title

Not sure where to find the bios version , and what happened to the other guy makes me nervous about updating it.

I wish dell would have some information, it is their product i am sure they know whats going on and all the failed installation on  their machines.

People say all kinds of things, some i would never attempt in case i bugger it up.

Dell needs to be upfront and come out with some information, i know it is a windows program we are trying to install and it is not their product, but the problem is actually their machine that will not install it .

so unless it is a fault in the win 10 program then dell needs to step up and help users

This is silly, not being able to install win 10., all they are doing is frustrating thousands of people who can't put win 10 on their machine, i am at the point of just giving up.

Next machine will have it on it but whether i buy another dell i questionable right now

This sours me about wanting to buy dell again.

They should be on these forums helping us

I totally hear you. That upgrade to win10 is turning into a nightmare. Sometimes it feels like I need a Ph.d in advanced computing just to deal with all the bugs and issues that pop up every now and then.

But even after attempting the upgrade from a clean factory reset with full updates and no additional 3rd party software (so as to reduce risk of interference and conflicts), it still doesn't work.

I'm pinning my hopes on Dell's next BIOS version release. Hopefully, they'll work out the issues with their drivers upgradability otherwise I might be stuck with win8.1 on this laptop and I'll have to buy a new one with Win10 oem. Just great, more money out the window emoticon.Lightning.title

But you might be luckier than I and already be running the most recent version. The way I check my BIOS is either via : control panel /system and security / administrative tools/ system information (it's the 11th line from the top -> BIOS Version Date)

or click on DELL SupportAssist / System Info / Motherboard (it's the 4th line from the top).

or just use command prompt and type:

systeminfo | findstr /I /c:bios

And in case you haven't already done it, make a yourself a bootable rescue DVD or USB & backup your system. This might literally save your device from becoming unusable in case of a major issue!

I had this problem but it was solved by updating the Bios to A13 version.  No problems in flashing the new bios, very straightforward.  Create recovery methods just in case, Macrium Reflect is a very good free programme.  Best of luck with Windows 10, it is a bit of an anti-climax once installed, not much different to Windows 8.1 and the 7737 STILL has a lousy keyboard!

yeah alrose might be on to something. Think I'll follow his cue and wait for the waters to settle and Win10 to be more road-tested. Not actually talking about smashing laptops on the highway lol

Jh, thx for the insight. How in the Freakin Bell were you ever able to flash your BIOS. I've been trying every single method on the net for two weeks with no success. Currently running A4.

Did you just upgrade from Windows with Antivirus off? emoticon.Confused.title

The 7537 and 7737 both need to be updated to A13 for a successful Windows 10 upgrade.
