Dell GX-620 and Microsoft Windows 8
I have a GX-620 and have been trying to get windows 8 installed on it...
The MS compatibility wizard says that everything (apps) should work, but 2 or 3 may need to be re-installed...
However, I can't get Win8 to install...
I select download updates and it does... Then it says that windows is restarting, please wait... after a minute or two a box appears saying sorry, something went wrong (but, it doesn't say what)...
I've tried a few times... if it doesn't actually restart, that's all it does, restart, and restart, and restart... finally, after restaring five or six times it says that windows cannot install on this computer and that it's resetting everything to original condition... which halfway works...
I've tried 3 different GX-620's... two with XP pro... and one with Vista (all 32 bit)...
All with the same results... Windows 8 will not install on them...
I, of course, will appreciate any constructive help that can be offered...
Thanks in advance... please, let me know if I left out any important information...
System Specs on the Vista machine:
Intel Pentium D 945 (Presler 65nm)
8GB DDR2 RAM
MB: 0HH807
GeForce 6200 (256MB)
640GB HD
SoundMax Int. Audio
MS Vista Home Premium 32-Bit SP2

There has to be something else going on with the install. I have a GX620 and Win8 Pro installed fine. Infact im on it typing this right now. How are you installing?(CD Rom,Install Wizard Etc..) BTW,has to be a Clean install going from WinXP, will only upgrade if coming from Win7. Dont worry,Win8 reconized all the hardware with no problems. Dont forget to backup any files(music, pictures, videos) or you'll loose them all.

I tried to install with CDROM, Install wizard, compatibility wizard -> install wizard, usb flash drive... I've tried and tried and tried... Attempting from compatibility wizard restarts the computer and it stops when the four blue windows appear... the little swirling circle beneath the windows NEVER appears...
It is very good to know that Windows 8 Pro will work on a GX620...
Since that is the case, I will continue to explore other options for installing it...
However, if anyone has anymore suggestions as to why this may be happening or how I can get around it, I would greatly appreciate it... Thanks...

You have non admin account or malware or some other issue.
The DOWNLOAD Version or even the upgrade DVD sits on the 4 blue square windows screen
for a VERY VERY LONG TIME but it does eventually work. Windows 7 and 8 are DVD and therefore REQUIRE a good DVD Drive.
There are ZERO issues for installing Windows 7 AND
other than the NX Bit requirement for Windows 8 on a GX620. Its a non issue.
In CMOS under security the NX Bit is called (Execute Disable Bit).
This option DOES NOT SHOW For OLD versions of the bios and or
if the processor DOES NOT Support it.
ALL VERSIONS of the Pentium D processor support this and therefore work with windows 8.
Bios A11 should probably be done BEFORE trying it however.
The Soundmax driver comes from Microsoft Catalog.
Most of the hardware uses Native Windows 7 Drivers with the exception of the Audio Codec.

To run the premium versions of Windows Vista, including the Windows AeroTM user interface, PC's should be configured with at least 1GB system RAM and 128 MB graphics memory.
To help further optimize the Windows Vista experience Dell recommends 2 GB dual-channel (2-DIMMs) system RAM, a Dual-Core processor, a 7200 rpm Hard Drive and at least a 256 MB discrete graphics card.
ASUS EAH6450 Silent/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon HD 6450 1GB works in all models EXCEPT The USFF because the USFF has no expansion slots.

DirectX June 2010 is also Highly Recommended.
Download DirectX Redist (June 2010) from Official Microsoft ...
Download file, Extract to a folder, RUN DXSETUP.EXE as Administrator.
Even if its AGP, it still might be supported under Windows 7 (Via Legacy Drivers),
what you need to meet are the minimum video requirements which 128 MBs of Video RAM along with being DirectX 9 compliant.

My Dell D610 is compatible with Windows 8.1 and Office 2013, but it lacks video controllers. I tried with "Intel(R)915GM-GMS910-GML Win7" but it is unacceptable. Why don't your technicians build up some video controllers that may help poor users keep using "old-but-not-bad" Dell D610?
Looking forward to having VIDEO CONTROLLERS FOR DELL D610 on Windows 8 & 8.1 soon.

You won't. Dell drivers are predominantly rebundled drivers from the component manufacturers.
For instance all the Intel Drivers are made by Intel and then slightly modified by Dell.
The 915 GM does not have a proper Windows 7 driver just a Windows XP driver. For Windows Vista, HP modified a driver slightly so it installed in Vista and it also works with Windows 7 however does not fully support Aero in either case. For Windows 8.0/8.1 this driver is rejected for more details see here:
