Inspiron 15-3521 - Critical Error
Good morning,
My laptop is not functioning correctly, I am getting the following results when running diagnostic tests:
Error code: 2000: 01 42
Validation code: 100554
There is no boot device detected and the media checks fail.
As a result I have purchased a new hard drive (reseating it did not solve the problem). What is my next step? I do not have discs to reload the OS.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you.

The reason you are getting the problem is because you don't have a Dell Wireless 1704 card. You actually have a Dell Wireless 1705 card which is why I asked for the hardware ID to check against.
Install this driver:
http://ftp.us.dell.com/FOLDER02013131M/1/Network_Driver_HP06Y_WN_10.0.0.276_A00.EXE

That's normal; a new hard drive will have no Windows Operating System loaded on it and hence give the boot error. Diagnostics ran with the new drive should not return 2000-0142 however.
You will need to prepare Windows (likely Windows 8.1) installation media. Unfortunately I'm not sure what edition you will have and you can't check system as you have no access to your old installation.
Its most likely to be Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 Single Language or Windows 8.1N. See the instructions here to prepare installation media:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/
If the correct edition is used you will not be prompted for a product key. If the incorrect edition is used then you will proceed to the license agreement screen.

Hi Philip,
I was successful in loading Windows 8 onto my laptop. Thanks for your help on that. I am now having trouble as my wifi adapter does not appear to be working. I cannot figure this step out. Any suggestions?
I also have not activated windows yet.

Please provide the hardware IDs so I can identify any unknown devices:

Under "Other Devices" I have "Network Controller" with a yellow flag. ID's as follows. (There are no other lerts and no unknown devices):
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&SUBSYS_020C1028&REV_01
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&SUBSYS_020C1028
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&CC_0280
I have tried everything I have found on these forums, including reseating the wireless card under the keyboard but my computer still fails to recognize any wireless adapter. When loading the driver " Dell Wireless 1704 WiFi + Bluetooth Driver" I am eventually prompted to "activate wireless switch" which I cannot do.
Looking forward to your response! Thanks again.

I just spoke to Dell Software Tech Support, he was able to confirm that this is likely a software issue but told me that I must pay $129 for support that expires in 72 hours. This is a $350 laptop, so I refused.
Let me know what you suggest to get this corrected. Currently I am online via ethernet cable.
