I have dell 7520 laptop with windows 8
I would like to install 8.1
should I upgrade or fresh install ?? ( I could go to factory image and restore it and then upgrade)
one question I didnt find answer is : lets say I do a freash install iwth usb ' can I still use he factory image partition dell sent when IO got the pc ?
Thank you for writing the Dell Community Forum.
The upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 is recommended as it would preserve your files on the computer. You can also perform a clean installation if you have the Windows 8.1 media.
If you perform a clean installation with the USB media, that would erase the factory image that came pre-installed with the computer.

ok I am reading what you sent
another question: if I want to do a backup to my external hard drive ( it has files insde-photo music and so on) will they be deleted by the software dell backup and recovery or not ?
Thanks for your reply.
Dell Back up and Recovery requires the files to be on the root directory to make it bootable. Hence you would need a blank USB hard drive/flash drive.
I wouldn't recommend a hard drive to create a factory image. Since the factory image is around 7GB in size, I would recommend to use a 8GB flash drive to create a backup media.
