Booting from Vista CD freezes
Hey i'm trying to restore a HDD so i install the vista cd to the drive. It asks if i want to boot from the cd i say yes, it say loading windows files, then a mouse cursor appears with the vista background and thats it. There is no more CD activity and just minor disk activity at regular intervals. The hard disk is corrupted from a previous install so is there a way to erase it that will allow me to install vista from the cd??? I didn't think it would matter if i'm booting from the cd. It never was a problem before. Thanks in advance

The fact your hard drive was corrupted from a previous install, shouldn't make any difference to booting from a disc?
Give the disc a clean, and try it again?
If you still have problems, see if you can't borrow the OS from a friend? It has to be exactly the same OS of course.
But to make sure it's not the hard drive causing the problem, either try and borrow a [known working] spare drive from someone, and try booting from your OS disc again?
Or try and borrow an external enclosure to put it in, connect it to a friend's system, and see if you can format it that way?
But as I say... a faulty hard drive shouldn't cause problems with booting from an optical drive?

I agree with you, so i swapped in a known good hard drive and it will now boot from the vista re-install disk, but when i put the old HDD back in it hangs. Just one of those things i guess. I found a guy to clone my known good drive for 45 bucks so i'm just gonna do that. Thanks

just got a studio 1737 on monday and love it but thursday i was trying to load some family pictures and videos from advd and the drive froze up. after talking to dell support he could'nt resolve the issue so they are sending me another newone to exchange. the computer to over an hour to start up with thedvd stuck in it! yesterday it finally popped out .so I tried a brand new blank dvd and each time it said insert disc. even though it was already in the drive
