DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

I've got my new Latitude E6500, which came with the Dell ControlPoint (version A8.1.0.10.0 - 1974be) software.  Since it's available through Fn+F7, I don't want it showing up in my notification area (whether "hidden" behind that left arrow through Vista or not), so I right-click it and choose "Hide Tray Icon".  The problem is, it comes back next time I restart.

Short of stopping the software from running at all, is there any setting, registry key or startup commandline switch I can use so that this setting is remembered?

Thank you.

Edit: hold on- I just found a new version of the software (v.9.0.23, A06 ...should have checked for that first, sorry), so I'll install that and see if the issue has been resolved

Update: I installed the update found at  but when I went to check the version number, only the "installed modules" version numbers had been updated.  So I uninstalled DCP entirely, restarted and re-installed the software.  I see that must have been the intended behavior, as the Dell ControlPoint version number is still A8.1.0.10.0, but the Power Manager and Display and Devices' version numbers are now 9.0.23.  My original issue is still present: anytime I log on, the tray icon shows up again.  So my original question still stands: is there a way of getting the DCP software to remember this setting when I tell it to hide the icon?

Don't use that software, so just taking a wild guess here:

If you double click the ControlPoint  System Tray icon, does it open a window with a toolbar?  Look for a Tools>Options or Tools>Customization feature. See there's an option to show/hide the System Tray icon.

Altenatively, right-click that icon and see if the option to hide it is there.

Re: DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

Right-clicking the icon and choosing to hide from there is what I've been doing, but it doesn't remember that setting, as I said.

Opening the software, if the icon is already hidden, I see an option to show it again, and if it's still showing, I see an option to hide it, but that just toggles the same behavior as right-clicking and choosing to hide the icon; it doesn't remember what I tell it to do once I log off.

Vista might not be 'saving settings on exit'. Are you logged in with an account that has admin privileges?

You might want to repost this on the Vista forum.

Re: DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

Last week (when the forum was in temporary mode), I'd posted the following reply:

~~~~~~
My account is both a local machine and domain administrator account.
Thanks for moving this- I hadn't posted it here because I view it as an issue with the Dell Software, not a problem with Vista.  But if this is where it belongs, then so be it.
~~~~~~

Another user (diardnic) then posted the following:

~~~~~~
Hi
This is not a Vista issue, as i'm facing the same problem under XP Pro, on Latitude 6500 and 6400.
If DCP is not launched, Ambiant light sensor is not working. So we are forced to keep Dell Control point loaded.
My "end users " are a bunch of dumb people, the less icons they see, the less troubles i get, so i really need to hide this one.
~~~~~~

Any ideas?  Is this something Dell is planning on getting fixed in their software?

I'd like to bump this up to the top of the list again- I'd really love to get this resolved or know that I've been heard...

Re: DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

I did remove the dcp icon by editing the registry with these steps:

1 - start 'regedit'

2 - navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run'

3 - remove the 'DellControlPoint' line

4 - close 'regedit'

The icon will appear only after you execute the dcp application again.

Ciao,

marco

Re: DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

Unfortunately, that also stops the software from running.  (As you might expect from the registry path).  Which means that I don't get the features offered by the software, which I like (ambient light sensor, etc).  I just want to hide the icon.

But thanks for the effort

Re: DCP (Dell ControlPoint) tray icon won't stay hidden

Try this:  Open Regedit, find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Dell\DellControlPoint\Preferences - change IsDCPSystemTrayVisibile to 0, then log out & back in.
