Dell Automated PC Tuneup

I've scanned through posts in the Forum, but I haven't really seen this covered suffiiciently -- is it worth buying Dell PC Tuneup?

I've spent over an hour this morning, trying to search through Dell Support, Google searches, this forum, etc ... looking for clear information on PC Tuneup and apparently it doesn't exist.  My computer is new -- the 30 day trial version of Automated PC Tuneup ran out last night.  I received a pop-up saying the trial version was finished and click here to purchase a subscription.  So being a reasonably knowledgeable consumer, I go to Dell Support because A) I want to know what I'm buying and B)I want to know what it's going to cost me ... and Dell Support answers neither question.  You sign up and then they tell what it'll cost.  No ... that's definitely not how it should work.  I want to know the cost before I subscribe to anything.  And I want to know EXACTLY  what I'm paying for.

So, Do I *need* the PC Tuneup?  I know how to do a disk cleanup.  I know how to do a defrag. of my computer.  And aren't these actions and other system maintenance tasks performed by Windows with the Task Scheduler anyway?  What is it with the Automated PC Tuneup that makes it a necessary addition to my computer?

Any opinions, information would be greatly appreciated.

Here is what Dell says about PC Tuneup:

No, it offers no benefit to anyone who knows how to do all it claims.

Thanks, but I've seen that link and as I said in my original e-mail it tells you next to nothing.  No prices, no listing of exactly what PC Tuneup does.  I think if Dell isn't willing to tell consumers what they're purchasing and why, then I'm not throwing my money away at them.

Has anybody purchased the PC Tuneup?  Does anybody who has it have an opinion to share?

Thanks,

Kim

I tested PC Tuneup a while back, and found nothing to justfy having it on my PC (much less purchasing it). In fact, it made changes automatically that I did not want. I uninstalled it before the trial expired. I can't recall all that it included, but it certainly included nothing I couldn't do better myself (and for free).

That's steep for something your PC can already do.  Thank you for the info.

I totally agree with you Joe. PC Tuneup offers nothing that you cannot do yourself FOR FREE!!  Its a ripoff as far as I am concerned. I would like to know how to uninstall the trial version. Can I do so from the control panel add/remove window? Your help is appreciated....perhaps a copy of your response can also be sent to my email address?   taki_8_9@yahoo.com

I came to this forum  (to which I'm new) thread following various fruitless attempts to get help from Dell website - I wasn't aware I'd paid for TuneUp but it's installed and the blue TuneUp window seems to be going all the time and no obvious way to close it or delete it as there's nothing listed in my programs listing. Any suggestions?

Hi
Is it listed in Add/remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (VISTA)

Click on start,Control Panel, Click on (one of the above) Click on Dell PC tuneup and uninstall it.
Reboot

Hi

Thanks, I've got Vista: the TuneUp is a subfunction on the Dell Support program, one of three task buttons. The TuneUp button is currently not checked so presumably it shouldn't be running.

As I've only recently had the Dell PC I don't really want to get rid of the entire Dell Support program (yet!).

Did you try stopping it at startup using MSCONFIG

Click start( symbol bottom left corner) Click Run Type MSCONFIG
Click Startup in the box that pops up.  Look  for anything concerning Dell support
or PC tune up. Uncheck  Apply OK  Reboot. After reboot a box will pop up. Put a
Checkmark in the box that says Don't show this any more(something to that effect)
See if PC tune up is showing up. If you take the Dell support stuff off startup i bet
your Comp starts up faster. Check it out

Thanks for the info - I've run the PC for a couple of days and the TuneUp window doesn't pop up any more so the msconfig route solved it (although I do get a message telling me that some start up items are blocked). And yes, it is quicker starting.

Hi
When the box comes up just put a checkmark next to the Don't show this again message.
It will be gone
