Dell XPS 15 9530 Laptop keyboard single and double quote issues

Hello,

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 15.

I have found when I use the keyboard that when I press the " button once, nothing appears on the screen. If I press the " button a second time then "" appears on the screen.

Or if I press the " button but keep on typing the " appears after the next key stroke.

If I press the " button then space bar, then the " will appear but there will not be a space on the screen and I have to press the space bar a second time.

The is the same with the ' button as well.

I am not even sure the best way to search this issue on Google or on Dell Support.

There is no problem with the button.

I appreciate any help any one has on this matter.

Thanks

Hi bamcauliffe,

Sorry for the delayed response. I would suggest you to change it to different UK Keyboard layout and change it back to "US" and "United States-International" to check if the issue reoccurs.

Hi bamcauliffe,

The keyboard layout would have changed on your computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to change it on your Windows 8 computer.

  1. The first thing we need to do is launch the Control Panel, you can do this by pressing the Win + R keyboard combination and type in ‘Control Panel’ and click on ‘OK’.
  2. Switch to the small icons view by selecting the drop down from the top right corner.
  3. Select the Language option.
  4. On the right-hand side you will see an ‘options’ hyperlink, click on it.
  5. ON the next screen you will be able to add and remove keyboard layouts.
  6. So add ‘US’ country under the ‘Input method’ section.

Also, please check is issue reoccurs with external USB keyboard connected.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hello,

Thank you for your help.

On my computer, I already had

"US" and

"United States-International"

So I already had a "US" Input method.

Is there anything else that you would recomend that I try.

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your help.

I added the UK keyboard.

I removed the US and US international keyboards

The UK obviously did now work.

I then re-added the US and US international keyboards.

The US one worked correctly.

The US international keyboard had the same problem as before.

I remove the US international and the UK keyboard.

This has successfully resolved the problem. Thanks

Hi,

To me it looks like the keyboard is functioning as expected. As I understand it, the US International keyboard supports accentuation of vowels. As such the keys providing accent are dead keys on the first stroke waiting for the vowel on the second stoke to create an accented letter. The single quote is actually used as the accent acute, and the double quotes is used as the umlaut. The same happens to the accent grave and tilde key, and to the accent circumflex key. Should you want to use the key you mentioned for quotes, you should press it and follow with a touch on the space bar.
